Re: Questionaire

My Dad was a herdsman in the 70's and was one of the first to be trained in DIY AI.I think it was frowned upon by the establishment at the time.I'll ask him a few questions for you.

Re: Questionaire

I'm not totally anti AI, I just don't like using it on our farm as Dad is no good at spotting cows in heat, and untill I get away from this office desk I'm chained to that won't change!!
I can't remember my exact remarks on AI before, but I was probably trying to play devil's advocate, however unsuccesfully!!

We've just bought a bull which was ET, we have used AI in the past.

I know my Grandfather (89) would have initially been sceptical of AI, but can now see the merits of getting higher genetic merit than might be available through a natural service sire. For us as commercial farmers a natural service sire is useful, heat detection and insemination in one automatic unit!!

I can't wait for the first crop of calves out of our most recent purchase!

Re: Questionaire

My dad was trained to AI by alan a's dad, and that was a very long time ago now.

It meant for us in Northern Ireland that we were able to step more quickly away from the friesian blood into the holstein, and this was more or less the only way to do it. Of course there are plenty of 'well' bred holstein bulls in the NI now. I think it was moore told me that we register the same number of bulls as England does every year, but with a fraction of the cow numbers.

We have never been totally AI. Started to AI mid November and chucked in the bull when they went to grass (often a limousin) to tidy up any time wasters. Now that cows are mostly in, we still keep one handy for a repeater.
