posticon Western Canada Trip

 emoticon
In view of the good response to FOAF's plea for help re his american trip. I thought I might try a similar request. Our family holiday this year is to Western Canada.
  - Proposed route is Vancouver to Vancouver Island, back to Vancouver on to Chilliwack - Penticton - Vernon - Revelstoke - Lake Louise - Banff - Red Deer (Morsan sale) - Calgary (stampede).
We have had good help and advice from Dr David Chalack, but would really appreciate any ideas on holstein herds to visit en route as well as places of interest.

Re: Western Canada Trip

stanhope / wedgwood springs to mind! both on vancouver island, stanhope is in victoria and wedgwood is further up near duncan. wedgwood is a freestall of 180 cows and a show barn, stanhope milk less and more of the show cows are there, lampada holsteins from sk have just moved there too. willswikk are near wedgwood too, a real breeders herd. vancouver island is meant to be a beautiful place. my brother is currently at wedgwood!
t&l cattle and cedarwal is in the chilliwack area. other herds that spring to mind in western canada; continental, and skycrest is meant to be good.
hope this helps

Re: Western Canada Trip

just make sure you don't spend too much time visiting herds because you don't want to speed through Banff and Jasper and I would strongly recomend you spend the extra time to continue down through the waterton glacier national park. close to lake louise there's moraine lake, don't miss it.

when I was in calgary back in 1987 they had a really nice zoo and there is also a "heritage park " that is sort of a village full of old buildings etc which was also enjoyible if you like to find out about the historical aspect.Stampede is great.... take the time to see the cutting horse finals .... those horses are unbelievible...poetry in motion!

Re: Western Canada Trip

If you like Chinese food, vancouver has one of the world's largect chinese populations (outside of china, obviously) and the food is exceptional. Vancouver is a bit more like NI weather tha the rest of Canada and can be damp / cold, even in July.

For sight seeing, the Okanagan valley leads to the Rockies and is fabulous, with lots of wineries and sights.

Lake louise is well worth a visit. Allow lots of time for journeys, it is a BIG country.

Don't know if you can get across the border, but markwell is quite close and am told it is an exceptional visit.

My parents have been to the Stampede many times and always adored it. The chuck wagon racing is great fun, as well as dangerous.

markwell is about an hour south...... we had fun at the border explaining that our reason to visit canada for one day was to see a cow on the island......exactly what we did oh remeber a great seafood salad lunch at some resturant near stanhope holsteins while we waited for our boat to come in!

Re: Western Canada Trip

Go to the Craig Street Brewpub in Duncan, ask for Phil. Tell him Big Daddy from university says he can't brew beer worth a darn and his wife's way too good for him.

He'll show you a good time.

Re: Western Canada Trip

If you decide to go down to the states just be prepared for some grilling at the US border - then Markwell and Vandyk-K are both only 10 minutes away on the US side from the Aldergrove border crossing.
Most of the best herds to visit have been mentioned, here would be my picks:
Island - Stanhope, Wedgwood, Willswikk, Sunnyvale (if you have time - their prefix is Poelman). There are lots of touristy things to do around Victoria (museums, parks, gardens, whale watching).

Vancouver/Fraser Valley - Alpina(nicest facilities around, Master Breeder herd), Cedarwal, Lavender, T&L Cattle, Elmbridge (home of Bronze - but she's currently dry), Chilliwack Cattle Company (largest dairy in Canada - purely commercial, so only if you want to see a large set-up). Minter Gardens is only 10 minutes from T&L Cattle; Fort Langley is an interesting stop; Harrison Hot Springs is a nice place to stay.

Okanagan - Rockledge, Springbend, DeWitts(Goldenset) (stop for an ice cream at their dairy in Sicamous), DeWitts(Dari Delite), there are a lot of good herds and new facilities in the Okanagan area.

That's probably more farms than anybody wants to visit, if there is anything specific you're interested in let me know. If you get your hands on a BC Holstein Directory you'll have no problem finding the farms.
