I actually enjoy it. Believe it or not I miss the Primaries - with the elections held just about every week. Never missed a debate.
Then again, I was a huge Hillary Clinton fan ...haven't found it that easy of a time swinging my support over to Obama yet though.

Ive been following it closely too....they have even shown the debates as a live telecast here altho I only watched the Palin one. That was a curved ball noone saw coming!
To be honest both scare me and Im beginning to think madam clinton may have been the lesser of the evils.Im glad Im not having to vote this one.
Havent heard any whispers at all as to either candidates take on agriculture? From that point of view which party would be better /worse?Or more of the same?

non americans can enjoy the election because they have a chance to get away from it, guess the US have in your face 24/7. I think Palin has made what could have been a boring election a little bit more exciting.

Re: US Election 2008
Isn't the NFU in the US a bunch of socialist goofballs, exactly like the NFU in Canada? Have no doubt OUR NFU would go for Obama in a heartbeat.
Keep your head down Buckeye, sure is some vitriol in the air down there.

Re: US Election 2008
Is there any licensing procedure for gun ownership in the US, or can you just buy one over the counter like you see in films?

Re: US Election 2008
Indeed. I have 12 bore and .22 as well. And for a law-abiding farmer, it isn't hard to obtain a license for these. But you have to have a reason, i.e. pest control or sport, and you must have written permission to shoot over lands if they are not your own or be a member of a sporting club. You have two referrees on your application of social standing too e.g. minister of religion. They run lots of checks on you, including mental illness history if they want. All ammunition sold over the counter is accounted for. A law like we have wouldn't make any difference to you, except a little more paperwork.
Shotguns they are more relaxed about. Rifles are a different matter. And high powered rifles make them quite nervous. But then people had been using them to blow police heads off for thirty years here. Mind you, not usually with legal weapons.
What exactly do you mean by home protection? Bears or burglars?

Re: US Election 2008
I think you would benefit from our system of control on guns.
I think we would benefit from your idea that its ok to shoot a threatening burglar.

Re: US Election 2008
Gun control is a subject which greatly interests me. I used to be an avid target shooter, getting my ' half blue' (university colours) and captaining the Cambridge University Pistol team to victory in the Varsity match. I had just shot my first ever national squad qualifying score in centrefire pistol, when a madman killed a group of schoolchildren at Dunblane, using properly licensed pistols. In a knee jerk reaction the UK government banned all handguns, and I gave mine up without complaint - any protest would have been flying in the face of a ground swell of public opinion. What has happened since? Handgun crime and shootings have actually increased, with all handguns being driven underground. For this reason I am equally opposed to both the American and British stance on guns. Sane, law abiding citizens should be allowed to responsibly own firearms, but at the same time they should have nothing to fear, and nothing to hide from having these properly licensed and registered in a national database.
Anyhow, the polls have now opened in the US. Obama is still ahead in the polls, but nobody quite knows whether race will become a factor once people get inside the poll booths. Any predictions?

I've tried to keep out of this debate but that statement really shocked me.
The world and America will be a better place now and if you can't see what harm Bush has done to your country then God help you!
Mark you receive your news about the US filtered through several news organizations. From where I sit, I have to worry about the Tax rate making it very difficult to keep the farm in the family. Obama and the democrats want to elevate Estate Taxes, they want to take from productive Americans and give to the unproductive. Obama himself calls it "Redistribution". Why work hard, so that it can be taken away?
They want to take away the right of private ballot on unionization from my wife's family who work for HONDA. Within three years they will basically be forced to Unionize, and could face the loss of their jobs.
The Democrats encouraged economic policy that caused the current downturn, by forcing banks to lend to people that could not afford to pay them back.
If Obama had got his way two years ago we would have pulled out of Iraq, and that country would be a cesspool.
Abortion rights laws are going to be strengthened.
Democrats want to bring about an end to political free speech on public airwaves, at least those that disagree with them. They plan on introducing the Fairness Doctrine to stiffle political debate.
I see crazy environmental law being introduced and enforced.
I see energy prices being pushed higher in efforts to make us conserve more. We will not expand Nuclear power, we will not drill for more oil, and attempts will be made to close down the coal industry. Less supply, more demand, higher prices.
What feels good to the rest of the world does not feel very good to me. I see a person who promises everything, in front of massive crowds who fawn over his every word. He is now my president, and my enemy. Until he proves differently.......
