US Election 2008

I am once again sick and tired of our pending election can the madness end. I hate living in a "battleground" state. The robophone calls will not end. My mailbox is stuffed full of junk and my newspaper is filled with political letters. I can't watch TV without wanting to kill something, and I am sick of the Obamanation and Straighttalkexpress driving near my farm. At least we don't have a sitting president running, so the farm doesn't get buzzed by Marine 1.

Let the madness end.

I actually enjoy it. Believe it or not I miss the Primaries - with the elections held just about every week. Never missed a debate.

Then again, I was a huge Hillary Clinton fan ...haven't found it that easy of a time swinging my support over to Obama yet though.

To be honest both scare me and Im beginning to think madam clinton may have been the lesser of the evils.Im glad Im not having to vote this one.
Havent heard any whispers at all as to either candidates take on agriculture? From that point of view which party would be better /worse?Or more of the same?

non americans can enjoy the election because they have a chance to get away from it, guess the US have in your face 24/7. I think Palin has made what could have been a boring election a little bit more exciting.

Last monthly NFU magazine included an article on the election, apparently the US NFU track the voting record of each Congressman over an electrol term and score them accordingly...McCain score 0% (bad!) and Obama 100% (good!). They appear to be completely opposed on issues such as biofuels and import tariffs.

NFU? 100%? What are they tracking? Obama is very left wing. McCain is a moderate, despite what Obama is saying. McCain is a known Bipartisan, Obama is not.

I was rooting for McCain 8 years ago in the primaries against Bush. I think he would have done a way better job. Unfortunately father time and 8 years of Dubya have done him no favours. It's a pity. Not that I think Obama is a bad candidate, if I was a yank I'd probably be voting for him. Sarah Palin frightens the crap out of me.

US Election 2008

The US Farm Bill was a pork barrel boondoggle. 14% went for farm programs, the rest was public nutrition programs and pet projects, that were greatly expanded from previous versions. Also the moving of the Infectious Disease Lab from the isolated Plum Island to the US main land was part of the bill. I can thank Ohio's own Senator Sherrod Brown for that. I posted his reply to the email I sent him in the main chat section months ago.

That is a check mark in John McCain's favor in my book.

Isn't the NFU in the US a bunch of socialist goofballs, exactly like the NFU in Canada? Have no doubt OUR NFU would go for Obama in a heartbeat.

Keep your head down Buckeye, sure is some vitriol in the air down there.

Thanks, Tuesday will be very ugly. In my area, people will probably go McCain 4:1, like they did Bush in '04

We cling to our guns and our bibles. Gun sales in Ohio have gone up 30% in the last month. Many people fear what Obama and the Democrats will do.

Is there any licensing procedure for gun ownership in the US, or can you just buy one over the counter like you see in films?

US Election 2008

Waiting periods for certain classes of weapons, depending on state. Licenses are required to carry a concealed weapon. Zoning ordinances can declare gun free zones. I own three guns, 12 and a 20 gauge shotguns, and a .22 Remington Rifle. I have no license nor do I need one, for hunting and home protection. To put it in perspective on how often I use my guns, they have shot more cows, than squirrels or deer.

Re: US Election 2008

Indeed. I have 12 bore and .22 as well. And for a law-abiding farmer, it isn't hard to obtain a license for these. But you have to have a reason, i.e. pest control or sport, and you must have written permission to shoot over lands if they are not your own or be a member of a sporting club. You have two referrees on your application of social standing too e.g. minister of religion. They run lots of checks on you, including mental illness history if they want. All ammunition sold over the counter is accounted for. A law like we have wouldn't make any difference to you, except a little more paperwork.

Shotguns they are more relaxed about. Rifles are a different matter. And high powered rifles make them quite nervous. But then people had been using them to blow police heads off for thirty years here. Mind you, not usually with legal weapons.

What exactly do you mean by home protection? Bears or burglars?

I think you would benefit from our system of control on guns.

I think we would benefit from your idea that its ok to shoot a threatening burglar.

US Election 2008

Obama doesn't think it is ok to shoot a burglar or someone threatening your family.

I am entirely in favor of Castle Law. You break in to my home it is on like Donkey Kong.

Law abiding citizens should have the right to own guns. I don't think they need fully automatic assault weapons, and felons and the mentally ill should not have them. Waiting periods are a good idea, to allow for cool downs. I don't think the government needs to know where every gun is, and who exactly owns them. Our crappy local newspaper brought in a new editor several years ago. He is a flaming liberal, he made it a point to get a list of concealed carry permit holders and print them in the newspaper for "public safety".

Re: US Election 2008

Gun control is a subject which greatly interests me. I used to be an avid target shooter, getting my ' half blue' (university colours) and captaining the Cambridge University Pistol team to victory in the Varsity match. I had just shot my first ever national squad qualifying score in centrefire pistol, when a madman killed a group of schoolchildren at Dunblane, using properly licensed pistols. In a knee jerk reaction the UK government banned all handguns, and I gave mine up without complaint - any protest would have been flying in the face of a ground swell of public opinion. What has happened since? Handgun crime and shootings have actually increased, with all handguns being driven underground. For this reason I am equally opposed to both the American and British stance on guns. Sane, law abiding citizens should be allowed to responsibly own firearms, but at the same time they should have nothing to fear, and nothing to hide from having these properly licensed and registered in a national database.

Anyhow, the polls have now opened in the US. Obama is still ahead in the polls, but nobody quite knows whether race will become a factor once people get inside the poll booths. Any predictions?

US Election 2008

The preacher man says it’s the end of time
And the Mississippi River she’s a goin’ dry
The interest is up and the Stock Markets down
And you only get mugged
If you go down town

I live back in the woods, you see
A woman and the kids, and the dogs and me
I got a shotgun rifle and a 4-wheel drive
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

I can plow a field all day long
I can catch catfish from dusk till dawn
We make our own whiskey and our own smoke too
Ain’t too many things these ole boys can’t do
We grow good ole tomatoes and homemade wine
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

Because you can’t starve us out
And you cant makes us run
Cause one-of- ‘em old boys raisin ole shotgun
And we say grace and we say Ma’am
And if you ain’t into that we don’t give a damn

We came from the West Virginia coalmines
And the Rocky Mountains and the and the western skies
And we can skin a buck; we can run a trot-line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

I had a good friend in New York City
He never called me by my name, just hillbilly
My grandpa taught me how to live off the land
And his taught him to be a businessman
He used to send me pictures of the Broadway nights
And I’d send him some homemade wine

But he was killed by a man with a switchblade knife
For 43 dollars my friend lost his life
Id love to spit some beechnut in that dudes eyes
And shoot him with my old 45
Cause a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

Cause you can’t starve us out and you can’t make us run
Cause one-of- ‘em old boys raisin ole shotgun
And we say grace and we say Ma’am
And if you ain’t into that we don’t give a damn

We’re from North California and south Alabam
And little towns all around this land
And we can skin a buck; we can run a trot-line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

Hank Williams Jr

US Election 2008

Because weak minded people can vote for a populist that blames those rich guys? 70 years ago another hero came to power with similar ideals. That ended very poorly for him and his country.

I always thought that the 2 things I would never mention on here were religion and politics and I hovered over "submit reply" for 5 minutes earlier. The latter stages of Bush's presidency have reduced the US's standing in the World to a historic low and I find that both sad and frightening. Whatever his faults Obama gives the US a chance to wipe the slate clean and start afresh, McCain could never do that. I do not think that we can yet understand the enormity of what happened yesterday, that will take many years. Obama inherits the biggest mess in living US history and the wheels could come off big time, but I wish him well.

Mark you receive your news about the US filtered through several news organizations. From where I sit, I have to worry about the Tax rate making it very difficult to keep the farm in the family. Obama and the democrats want to elevate Estate Taxes, they want to take from productive Americans and give to the unproductive. Obama himself calls it "Redistribution". Why work hard, so that it can be taken away?

They want to take away the right of private ballot on unionization from my wife's family who work for HONDA. Within three years they will basically be forced to Unionize, and could face the loss of their jobs.

The Democrats encouraged economic policy that caused the current downturn, by forcing banks to lend to people that could not afford to pay them back.

If Obama had got his way two years ago we would have pulled out of Iraq, and that country would be a cesspool.

Abortion rights laws are going to be strengthened.

Democrats want to bring about an end to political free speech on public airwaves, at least those that disagree with them. They plan on introducing the Fairness Doctrine to stiffle political debate.

I see crazy environmental law being introduced and enforced.

I see energy prices being pushed higher in efforts to make us conserve more. We will not expand Nuclear power, we will not drill for more oil, and attempts will be made to close down the coal industry. Less supply, more demand, higher prices.

What feels good to the rest of the world does not feel very good to me. I see a person who promises everything, in front of massive crowds who fawn over his every word. He is now my president, and my enemy. Until he proves differently.......
