Eventful Week

I'm just getting round now after a very, very busy week to let you all know our happy news.

Baby Hannah landed on Sunday night with a payload of 7lbs and 14ozs. After weeks of dithering, it seems the process of labour kicked in right about the same time that the mower pulled in the gate to start knocking down the silage. Its been a tough week but I'd better get used to it. The pit was covered this evening, and baby has spent two entirely sleepless nights at here at home.

Mother and baby are doing well. Hopefully we all get a few hours sleep quite soon!

Congratulations! Your life will never be the same again! Make the most of every minute because time will just fly by. By coincidence my son would have been called Hannah if he had been a daughter, but given the number of Hannahs already in his year at school may be it is better that he was not!

Congratulations!! The great thing about kids is that the more you effort you put in the more rewarded you are(unlike our occupation)
My youngest is four and a half now and the eldest is starting senior school in September, time certainly does fly by.

Sincere congratulations to the whole family. They grow up fast, but are worth all the effort and hassle (mostly).

Brilliant news FOAF!! Hope you're doing your fair share of nappy changing and ensuring Mum is pampered!!

Not to steal your thunder James, but our second is due tomorrow! If it's anything like its older brother it'll be late! My wife is not best pleased that I've been relocated to Larne again, 1.5 - 2 hours drive from home!! Will keep you all posted!

Re: Eventful Week

Thanks guys for your good wishes. She is three weeks tonight. Seriously seems like three months. I find it hard to remember what life was like when we weren't 'just about to feed' or 'just after one'.

The Amish air really did the trick Buckeye! Well spotted.

Any tips for getting wind up, apart from gripe water and boiled water (not boiling)?

Re: Eventful Week

Does she have colic FOAF? You'll know if she has cos she'll scream the house down and pull her wee knees into her belly.

Our first wee lad, Sam, suffered from it, amongst other things, and we tried endless 'remedies' Gripe water, colief drops, Gaviscon Infant (mixed into the bottle)

If it is just wind you might try holding her in a slightly more upright position when feeding, almost sitting rather than lying flat. Wind every ounce (as I'm sure you are) by rubbuing both belly and back. Also try lifting her up into the air (gently) this helps to straighten out her wee belly.

As for the colic, the only thing we found that worked was an old remedy recommended by my wife's grandmother, ONION WATER!

Sounds mingin, but works a treat. Peal and quarter a small onion (tennis ball size) place it in a Pyrex (or similar) jug and pour on freshly boiled water to cover. Leave for a minute or two to infuse then decant off the liquid into a sealable container. Give 5ml before each feed and make a fresh batch every 24 hours. We never bought so many onions before or since, but worked a treat!!

Our second, Lily, was a week old on tuesday past and doing well. It's a mad house here at the moment, hence my lack of communication lately!!

Congratulations FOAF, our first had bother getting the wind up too. She screamed almost constantly for 8 months. So don't worry she'll start sleeping a bit better once she starts crawling.

Re: Eventful Week

And then the problems start !

You spend time trying to get them to walk and talk and the next twenty years telling them to sit down and shut up.

Congrats to all the happy parents, wouldn't change it for the world.

Eventful Week

my son was the baby from hell. he didnt only just have colic he had reflux. For the first year he only slept 4 hours straight. At one stage he screamed none stop every waking hour.We had to put both his cradle and later the cot up on bricks at one end to keep him nearly upright. After 3 months of breast feeding they decided he wasnt gaining enuf weight fast enuf and he went onto lactose free formula. That helped with the weight gain but didnt solve the vomiting. Finally the infant welfare sister decided just maybe he has reflux and we finished up at the pediatrician who prescribed 1/4 of a tablet of losec disolved in enuf water for an eyedropper every 4 or so hours .I think the kid felt such relief he used to just open his mouth when ever he saw me coming with the eyedropper. We had to give him losec until he was 18 months old and even today at age 5 if he gets worked up enuf he will bring on an attack of reflux.
that aside he was a charmer of a baby and mostly very sweet natured.

Ha Ha James!! Not to worry, thanks a million! By the time you get to number two you'll have it off to a fine art!!!
We're just about getting the hang of things with the wee woman, hope all's well at your end. Did you get your wind problem sorted?!!
We'll have to meet up some time!! I'm sure you're not for the Clogher Valley this year?

Re: Eventful Week

We had a bit of a scare using Gripe Water for wind/colic with Rebecca when she was a baby.
We gave it to her and it must have caught her breath, she went limp in my arms, looked like she stopped breathing for an eternity.
Then she started screaming/spluttering.
We never used it since that. One of those moments you never want to have again!
Just give it very slowly...

Re: Eventful Week

Just reminded me of a similar incident with Sam when he was new! Scary biscuits!! He quickly got turned on his belly and his face blown in. Blowing in their face soon gets the breathing refex going again if they stop, by the way.

We were using the infacol with Lily, which worked a treat, untill she started bringing up milk again. She's off it now and doing grand, at the moment we find the best 'winding position' is with her almost over your shoulder!! There are times when she burps and it makes us all jump!! She's her mother's daughter!!! (JOKING!!)
