Re: Cricket

Your first loss for some time, our first win for some time, winning is definetly better.

Boucher has been brought into the squad for the Wanderers test. Speculation has AB Devilliers opening the batting with Smith (I suppose he's got to stay, he is the captain after all!) Gibbs moving down to 3 or 4 and Boucher adding experience to the middle order. I hope Langeveldt plays, crock hand and all.

Harmison has done diddly squat so far (except for a one over blast on day three when he put Kallis on his backside), the Wanderers should be his best pitch though.

Pundits this end already have SA winning the series - I think they are being a tad hasty.

Re: Cricket

job to know which way the series goes from here. England just haven't fired as a unit in the way they were in 2004. More application from the batsmen, particularly in the first innings of the last matches, would put pressure on SA and make the bowlers job easier. In the second test Strauss, Trescothick, and Thorpe all showed it and England nearly came away with a win. At Cape Town no English batsman made 50, and thats how to loose.

You have less worries about your captains form than England do.

Just have to wait and see how England respond to the loss. I don't think they're much more than a good kick up the arse needed, and they've had that now. Trouble is SA have improved a lot from PE, and they now have the momentum.

Momentum is what it's all about. England were 278 for 7, now 411 for 8!!! Crikey!

Re: Cricket

What the hell are the umpires playing at with the bad light calls. If I'd payed to watch that and was sat in the evening sunshine when the game had been called off for bad light I'd have been bloody livid.

I know from experience that fielding can be harder than batting in bad light, but the rules say bad light is on offer to the batting side, and I don't think Vaughn wanted to come off.

Re: Cricket

By the way, just how bright is Herschel Gibbs?

Sledging the oppositions opening bowler, who might not be having a great series with the ball but still gets to bowl quick at him this morning. Not the brightest move. Especially when Harmison is averaging more than Gibbs with the bat this series.

 emoticon

I love Gibbs when he is on song and for his attitude, he is a bit of a character and God knows we need more of those in this beige new world we live in with everyone so politically correct these days, but that said he is not the sharpest knife in the box, he did admit after all that he had agreed to throw his wicket during the Hansie-gate debacle in India and then 'forgot' to when he was out in the middle!

I agree the umpires are hands down the turkeys of the game with their idiotic light decisions, Vaughan had every right to his irritation. Unselfish declaration by him, time will tell how it pans out.

Re: Cricket

What's happening BB? Harmison and Hoggard cramping, Giles dislocates his thumb, Fred Flintoff not 100% either, then your refried Aussie wickie takes a hard knock on the thumb two balls from the end. Sounds like Englishmen going down under the African sun!

Gibbs had a great day, a very studied performance for him, given his first life on 136! And that was probably as a result of Jones getting that knock on the thumb the previous ball. He needed to come good when Kallis didn't. I see the powers that be fined Vaughn his whole match fee because of his chirping about the umpires light decisions.

Re: Cricket

Both teams start to look tired in the field very quickly if the batsmen get on top. Wonder how much those back to back tests have taken out of them, particularly Durban.

I think this winters test series has shown the test rankings to be pretty accurate. Although England have made progress they have been flattered last year by a weak Windies team and an injury hit NZ. Australia are well out in front, but England, SA, India, Pakistan, NZ and Sri Lanka are all reasonably close together.

From form in the current test series probably only Kallis would get into the Aussie team from either team. Strauss would get good consideration, but not sure Australia would swap Langer or Hayden for him quite yet. The other real top class Englishmen, Vaughn, Flintoff and Harmison, just haven't fired up this series.

England need to be much more consistant from 1 to 11 if we aren't going to get rolled over in the summers ashes series, if not the rest of this one.

Talking about "Cricketts", what's with Harmison? Telling the media he wished he hadn't passed his fitness test and could go home. Poor fellow can't get his act together so now he doesn't want to play!!!

This is a paid professional?????

Re: Cricket

The tour is done and dusted, the poms looked like they had their bags packed a week ago already. Congrats on their series win in the 5 day game. We won the ODI series at a sort of stumbling canter.

Pretty evenly matched teams all in all. Harmison and the top order better pull their fingers out of the proverbial or the Aussies are going to kick major league butt in the Ashes and the ODIs.

Just as a footnote, man of the ODI series was a genuine home grown South African playing for England!

Have to say I haven't watched any of the odi's, not even highlights.

Was absolutely riveted by the test series, so I don't know why I switched off.

Has anyone seen 20/20 cricket its a faster game compared to one dayers and looks fun too.

Australia have just stepped into kiwi land for the next series and the first match is a 20/20 i wonder how Chris Cairns will go.

Too bad Billy bowden cant umpire there tho he is the best!!!

Not seen much of it, proved very popular in its first season here. Just another indication that the attention span of the human race is becoming ever shorter. Must say I would love to see Cairns slaughter Grumpy McGrath.

One day cicket is more popular than 5 day. 20/20 is more popular than 1 day.

if you didn't play at all and just went to the pub, it would be even more popular.

The attraction always was play then go to the pub.

As a batsman, some of my performances sounded a whole lot better after a few pints. emoticon

Re: Cricket

I saw aus a vs pak not long ago and the atmosphere of the game was terrific im a huge fan of all cricket but 20/20 would be really good to watch as there is a faster turnover rate for overs, less time for field placement and more getting on with it!!

I think Cairns will have fun belting us (hes a great batsmen) around too bad hes their only good player.

What the hell is going on with International teams.. South Africa,England,Pakistan,West Indies, India, England wake up to your selves.

They are playing school grade cricket. Doesnt any Nation take pride in the teams that are representing them??? Shame, Shame, Shame I say!!

You guys have nothing on the First Class Australian team. Come on world wake up and start playing some competitive cricket..

How about all the other International teams pick a world side Vs Australia. See how much the Aussies would kick there butts by!!! emoticon

The mighty Aussies are having a tough time at the start of their Ashes tour, first beaten by a county side(Somerset I think,) then the greatest upset in the history of the one day game beaten by the minnows Bangladesh - talk about David and Goliath - then taken apart today by a South African born pom!

What's happening Craigalea?

Anything, except being beaten by better teams, or not being good enough.

Mind you, still think they will take the ashes back to oz.

Re: Cricket

But for one exceptional innings Australia would have won, so lets not get excited yet. If Australia had won the first couple of games heads might have gone down, and the press would have got on Englands backs, so the first blows have been psycological rather than terminal.

Big bonus for me was Harmison's bowling. He is one of the real keys to the tests later in the season. If he can unsettle the top order then England do have a chance.

Harmison was excellent, he was obviously a day boy at school as he is not nearly so hot away from home.

Drawing attention to Australia's woeful start was more in reaction to the arrogance of the silly git's post, I mean Farmer Git's post.

Its about time they lost a few i think they needed the wake up.
Andy simons turned up drunk!! he deserved more than 2 matches for that!

Anyway well se wht comes out of the next matches as that was an awesome innings big then bigger hits and they lost their openers early. It would have been great to watch.

Draw in the one 50 over 'final' keeps things nicely on the boil in the run-up to the ashes.

Both teams bowled themselves into winning positions, neither could close the game out and let their oponents back in.

Like to thank Smous and the South Africans for the loan of their captain.

Outstanding performance as a leader and a batsman to win the twenty twenty cup with the cidermen against a Lancashire side that looked way superior on paper.

Thankyou Mr Smith. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
