Mating advice

VG Stormatic x VG Durham x EX Astre x Alanvale Inspiration Tina.

Average stature, decent width, very dairy. Very sound young cow who's improving nicely. If I wanted to nit-pick, needs protecting slightly for teat quality, and I'd like more length in the rear udder.

What would you go with?

I would suggest Colby, Pronto, Baxter, Armstead just off the top of my head.

I think Blitz or one of his sons would do a nice job. Just gotta watch the components, you have some bulls listed that tend to kick the pins up so guard against that.

Big Bird if you are gambling man that Shottle son of Pledge, Windy-knoll View 4aces would sure be interesting to me on your Stormatic.

Re: Mating advice

Wat bout Shottle or Laurin. Bob Schauf had a few members of the family when I was there. He had Inspiration Tina's Milan calve in-realy good old cow and her Red Marker was the best cow he owned-Trilogy.

Re: Mating advice

I would second the dundee choice, key here is not to go TOO dairy, being stormatic is dairy along with durham. A wildcard could be Bolton, one thing that would caution with him would be his -3 in DPR.

Choice can be tough, considering there are other bulls that could be suggested, however some are storm sons, some have storm further back, some are durham sons or have durham further back.

Re: Mating advice

Dundee isn't available in the UK, unless anyone from the North can manage to source some. emoticon

I'd go with a Blitz (Baxter?) to bring the rump down while holding or improving udder quality. Only doubt I would have would be on components, I'm guessing she may not be too hot in that department with that sire stack?

Re: Mating advice

I bought her as a G78 scored heifer, with an unspectacular heifer lactation and good components. I thought she'd mature from there with that pedigree and no major faults.

I bought her in-calf to Blitz, so her breeder obviously thought it a good mating, but she had a bull calf. She's milking much better with her second, but the components early lactation are fairly low so I'd be reluctant to go down the Blitz route again.

She's really got me thinking on what to use, which is why I'm asking for ideas on here.

Re: Mating advice

Can you get a hold of some Jolt semen? We used Jolt heavily in our herd and loved every one of them. He would improve the udder while helping with components. His daughters are good with health traits especially repro. We have a four year old Jolt that went excellent as a three year old. Accelerated contracted her to Pontiac and Colby, while Select thought enough of her to test her Durham son that we have on the ground (unfortunatly he is CMV positive) and they might be interested in a Colby son too. We asked both sire analysts why they are interested in old genetics like Jolt, and they both said that he was a bull that they missed when using as a sire of sons and that they were looking at daughters.

Re: Mating advice

Depend on how close you like your breeding. . . .but if you want to help the components and improve mammary scores then you could do alot worse than Braedale Goldwyn. 0.21% Fat and 3.24 Mammary, but you have to bear in mind he is a James X Storm, and with the cow in question being a Stormatic. . . .there would be alot of Storm blood in the pedigree.

Re: Mating advice

BB, did you ever decide what to breed the cow with? Her Talent daughter is nice enough but a bit more strength wouldn't hurt her. I'll try and put a pic of her on here if i can work out how to do it!

She's seved to Dolman, due for PD at next weeks vet visit, but although she hasn't been bulling I'm not convinced she's in calf.

emoticon One of those days I'm glad to be wrong. In calf.

Looking well. Could probably get 87 points on her today, but probably going to be too stale to move come Feb when we next classify.

If she were still down in GP I would, if I currently had others desperate to do I would, but the cost has to come in to it.

I thought she'd be 86 back in August, if we had a special now and she went 86, or the classifier didn't move her £200 looks very expensive for a cow that's already VG.

I'll save the cash for now, hopefully put it towards a flush next time round.

Of course, it the owner of her Talent daughter felt like paying....... emoticon

Re: Mating advice

Thats a strange coincidence, i served it yesterday to Outside. She's a nice enough heifer but would just like to see her a bit bigger.
I'm glad she's classified well for you, i took a bit of stick after that sale for buying a calf out of a 78 pt heifer. I thought i was missing something because i seemed to be the only one who thought it would make into a better cow.
