A purchase that you are happy with..

What purchases have you made, whether it be an embryo, cow, heifer, etc. That when you look back at, made you happy to do so?

Personally.. There have been several. When I bought 4 holsteins from a local farm, all have gone VG. Bought two heifers last year at a local sale, both are nice heifers, one of which is an easy VG.. An Advent we picked up for 1500 or so at a local sale, that placed 1st Jr 2yr at this springs carousel, BU, and is also VG VG-MS...

Can't say for sure of the other purchases this spring. But the others mentioned, im very happy with, and the fact two of those heifers I bought last spring have interest with Select Sires (whether anything goes or not, because their mating suggestions dont fall in line with my goals), im extremely pleased..

Jeff

So buying "local" has been a bit of a disaster then Jeff? What with all those VG "duds". I can quite see why you want to spread your wings now. emoticon

Jeff you have obviously had a change of policy.Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure that you once stated that you wouldn't buy good pedigrees because you were going to build up the VG's and EX's from scratch with your own animals.

Yes, I have changed my personal prefrences. I am still working on developing some that are out of familys such as the ones from the original group. I have one line started quite nicely, into my 2nd generation from that line.. Dam needs to mature quite a bit, but the heifer she had, a shottle, is a great continuation of that family. Then an advent out of a blockbuster (leducxalicia), nice calf.. The reason why I changed my view of buying into deeper pedigrees, instead of developing my own, is noteriety.

I talked with someone that is well known in the breed (ill leave names out as far as he is concerned), and I have seeked advice from this person. I asked him, what made you well known? He said, "I'd have to say, a cow family". After pondering that, and seeing how it has helped many others sell heifers, I decided to do the same. So last year I picked up those two heifers. The fact they are backed by some outstanding people, I am glad I did. Then this year I decided to kick it up a notch, and buy something backed by several generations of excellent dams.

So for the next 2 years, I plan on going after a couple more deep pedigreed heifers (depending how the economy goes as well).. And those I seek are not in NY.

When you have a VG out of a pedigree that is backed by GP only, or out of a pedigree where there are other VG's, that isn't a dud. However a VG out of several generations of excellents, and she remains in VG territory, it is a dud in that family.. Her final score prooves she simply isn't as good as the rest of the family. It's no different than a 97pt cow like Tamara, out of a GP83 dam. That is the opposite end of the spectrum, she is a freak..

Is a freak a freak if she goes on to make excellent daughters? Or does she turn into a freak brood cow?

Is a VG cow from a long line of Excellents a ''dud'' if she is the only 1 of that family that goes on to produce a proven AI sire with over 3points on type, mega production and fantastic health traits ???

Will, you must be thinking about Laramee, the other three bulls are all from excellent dams. emoticon here's something for you to ponder Jeff, Laramees dam, Lariat is VG-88, her dam was Ex-95, her gr,dam was Ex-91 BUT her great gr,dam was G-76.
in one generation the family went from a "cull list" -76 to Ex-91 and after two more generations the family produced a world class bull.

a purchase I'm happy with is the one I made eight months ago, that made me the proud owner of a Harley Davidson. emoticon

Bought a case of Loc-Tite general adhesive. All the baling twine and duct tape in the world can't do what it can.

oooh we are happy with out purchase. A farm with GRASS!!

Recently moved the whole herd to western victoria, the cows are pugging around in the mud now. 6.5 hours on the truck was worth it for them. Grass everywhere and a new herd to play with too!

10 year oldJCB 526S loadall bloody brilliant does everything you want and more can not believed howi manged with the other 25 ear old one.

On a cattle front bought a bull during foot and mouth in 2001 when we had no AI technicien calling so he got the cows in calf first and foremost. I chose his pedigree off net as i couldnt visit farm he has left me with alot of excellents and vg that are leaving their stamp on their own progeny if i had known how good they would of been i would not of used him so slectively as i save dthe best cows for when AI started again. He finally went with TB on valuation. He was Weeton Morocco

which used to be mine when I was single......

in college it was use and abuse and hang on a string for later

howard keeps getting cruder, if that is possible, but every now and then I listen, biggest challenge is, we don't have the remote system hooked up yet so I have to walk all the way over to change it, such a pain(smiling broadly right now). i like to have music variety instead of the one channel that played the rolling stones 24 hours a day.

Thanks for the Karma points all...I do feel very lucky - married my best friend years ago and see so many who do not seem happily married. We have had a great life together. Sometimes I have to remind myself how fortunate I am. Just hope all my children will marry as well as I did - so far they have done ok.
