Arent we judging the cow and what she has done not past glories?
We will all judge the best cow of 2008 by our own criteria - this is what makes this competition so interesting and much less predictable.
Of course we are primarily judging the individual by her own performance, whether it be conformation, index, production, lifetime yield or brood cow qualities. Some of us will put huge emphasis on show type, whilst others might put more weighting on brood cows or lifetime yield. Most of the nominations only have brief back pedigrees for interest. Obviously if it is abrood cow nomination there is much more information on her progeny.
Personally, my vote would go to the dam of a top proven bull if there was one on the card - but there isn't (yet) so I'll have to look at other criteria. To me breeding AI proven sons is the ultimate test of a cow's genetics - at least for now, until genomics are perfected!
In certain circumstances it is difficult to separate pedigree from the cow's own achievements e.g. a 12th generation excellent is a special cow ... can one ignore the previous 11 generations and say she has achieved the same as a first generation excellent?
This is why everybody's placings and reasons will be interesting, provided they stay polite and positive!!

Re: Member Cow of the Year
Howie,I was just wondering what the production credits were on Randi? I looked on the website and it is just her 3/8 yield posted. Is the VG87 Skyfame the only daughter milking so far? For the british and Canadian cows I can get this info off the web, but it is not freely available from Holstein USA.
Although they are all great cows, this class is extremely difficult to judge because of the diversity of their accomplishments!

Re: Member Cow of the Year
If you give 1st palce 3 pts, 2nd 2pts and 3rd 1 pt, then its a very interesting vote so far.
I make it as follows, Linderra 13, Randi 12, Aka 9, Pamala 8, Brooke 5, Joyful 4, Kristen 2 and Olga 1.
To health and long life.

Re: Member Cow of the Year
Just Seen that Brookvilla Jasper Aka made All Canadian.
And for the voting i think 3,2,1 for scores of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd is too small in my opioion. I see the all canadian format is 7, 3, 1 for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd......just an idea.

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, I've been on vacation. Randi also has a 5-4 record of 33,777 1301 fat and 1019 protein. The Skyfame is her only milking daughter here and is due in March with her third calf. Randi does have a Roy milking in Wisconsin but she hasn't been classified yet. Her next two daughters that are due are two Goldwyn's, one due in March and one due in May.

I also thought that 1, 2 and 3 points was too close and thought may be 5, 3 and 1. I would have no problem with following the All Canadian format either.

Just an update on Randi's daughters. The Skyfame is now Excellent, and the Skyfame's daughter is scored VG 87 1st lactation. Rochelle scored VG 88 @ 2-3 and a full sister to Rochelle here scored VG 87 fresh one month.
