My Crossbred Cow Thread....
Amazing chest width, something you just cant get with the Jersey. She looks like she will fatten too when her day is done, though by the loom of her thats going to be a while yet!

Jonny sorry to go off thread but i like the look of your sand beds do you mind telling us your routine and approximate sand uasge on your system ? we put in about 200kg a bed every 3 weeks with a skid steer and rake it daily in between
We don't really measure how much we put in, we just put it in until it looks right. Nothing scientific about filling it, just make sure there is enough there. We fill once per week or sometimes during the summer, twice if it is needed.
Stalls are raked three times a day while cows are being milked with a diagonal motion. I will never, ever bed with anything but sand. Other people are paid well to deal with the annoyances of it

Cow #2
#1595
Picture is from her first lactation. Currently she is due on April 4th with her 3rd calf.
Sire: Rock Ella Paramount
Maternal Grandsire: Ricecrest Marshall
Lactation 1:
27300 lbs.
295 DIM
92.54 lbs/day
3.89% fat
3.24% protein
73 days open
Lactation 2:
36240 lbs.
342 DIM
105.96 lbs/day
4.17% fat
3.38% protein
120 days open
She is a little frail for my liking but it does not seem to affect her at all. This isn't necessarily my best Ho X Jersey but she definitely is in the upper echelon. Whenever I look at her, I wonder how in the world she competes with those gigantic Holsteins in the pen with her. She definitely inherited the aggression of a Jersey.
Her first two calves are Peterslund daughters with the first one due to calve on 4/16. Right now this cow is carrying a Montbeliarde inside of her.
Just to note, I'll post some pictures of some successful crosses. But I'll also follow up with some that didn't work so well. I don't intend to portray crosbreeding as 100% peaches and cream

Paramounts are machines even in the pure state. What prompted you to crossbreed Jonny? Do any of your neighbours?
I definitely love my Paramounts. The last one freshened this week and from there it's on to the Jacinto's.
Crossbreeding on our farm start sort of on accident. A sire analyst from Accelerated Genetics had some purebred Brown Swiss and purebred Jersey animals that we housed for a time to build some good production records.
The first cow in the thread, 1092, was probably the result of having some Brown Swiss semen in the tank that was used to service the pure Brown Swiss we were housing. Sort of a last chance service for the cow. Lo and behold the cow got pregnant and my father was horrified when a heifer calf came out.
What really got it going was the purebred Jersey animals we were housing. They were extremely aggressive and healthy. My dad decided we needed some Jersey blood in our herd and we started breeding our heifers to Jersey. My dad then started sprinkling some Swedish Red into the program.
I took over from there in 2006 after graduating from college and expanded the scope a lot more. Here we are in early 2009 and we'll start seeing the effects of my decisions in the milking string soon.

Jonny, your cows seem to carry no body hair at all, are they all body clipped?
Nope. Those pictures are from summer. Maybe our sprinklers wet their hair down and it looks smoother.

It rains a lot here but my cows never look like that! What about the udders, are they clipped or singed? They seem completely devoid of hair as well.
Udder hair is singed when they dry off.
