Mark, dont apolgise for these, anyone would be proud of these cows and the fact that you couldnt get the heads up on most because they were eating grass and making money

Re: Addison pictures

They do look wet, and the bull obviously worked in your herd. But you can hardly blame some for dissliking the bull, his faults are in his proof. I could put my Storm pitures on here and most would like them to, but that doesn't change the fact he does blow the odd bag, (just not here) again its in his proof. I did like your golf quote.

I love the 86 x mountain!

Long, very fit, and milky.

I can't quite figure from the photo what puts her 4 points below the cow after her?

Great cows Mark, congratulations. What progeny do you have from them? I enjoyed the exclamation mark behind the Addison x Mountain mating! As FOAF says, it worked out.

If I was your WWS rep I'd want you to breed them all to a Durham son (sorry I can't help myself.) To Mar D Fortune would be my bull of choice if he was available in the UK: the cows have all the production grunt they need, Fortune would help with udders and feet and legs, fat percentage and daughter fertility. Zenith would be my second choice.

I am interested to hear what other cowtalkers would breed them to as a group.

Calano is the closest to a perfect match I can find.

looking at the pictures of your beautiful cows, I think they are living proof of the fact that how you use a bull is at least as important as what bull you use.

Nice cows Mark.

Smous, what about Boss Iron, Freeman, Spy, Merchant or Lheros?

Re: …

The top cow has not had a heifer she has been served with Dynasty this time and i think she had a Lucente last time.
The second cow has never had a heifer, well actually she had twin heifers first time round as a result of sexed Principal but she calved six weeks early .She isn't served yet but she will get either Ignigter or if it is delivered by the time she is to serve she could well get Merchant.
The third cow had a really good heat at about 60 days fresh, she was giving 55kg a day but because she was having such a good heat I thought I'd use up the last straw of Spy and use something different when she repeated-guess what happened!! She has two Lucente daughters.
The picture of the fourth cow doesn't do her justice, she could well gain a couple of points. She has a Principal milking and last time she had a heifer by our stock bull. She has had three straws of Champion so far this time! Her dam was a lump of a cow that gave 5% milk but not much of it.Her grand dam is still here at 11 years old and back in calf with her 9th.
The fifth cow from the Mountain held first service as she has done every single time. She will have her fifth calving at 6 years 2 months. She is in calf to Moet Nansen. She is an easy Excellent when we can get her classified.I think she will be dry again this time.In hindsight we should of had her dam DNA'd because she looked nothing like a Mountain! Before that was Blackstar and then a cow called Shanghi Mandingo mandy which some may of heard of.We have milking daughters by Principal and Lucky and a yearling by Shottle.
The sixth cow beats the last one for fertilty as she will have her fifth calf at 6 years old.By then she will have completed 50 Tonnes. She has nice in calf heifer by Raul and a milking Manat that milks like her mum but hasn't got the hang of holding in calf yet!She is in calf to Freeman and last year had a bull by Shottle.
The last cow gave 14500kg in 305 days second lactation and perhaps we weren't patient enough with her before we put her with the bull which sired a heifer calf. She is served this time with Ignigter.

I have flirted with the idea of Zenith but not actually used him .He would work well on Addison.

Thanks for the positive comments on the cows,I just wanted to show why I wanted to use a son.As Delegate has the nearest linear to his dad and comes from a family i admire he seemed worth a punt!

Errolston, Boss Iron covers all the bases, and if someone held a gun to my head and said chose one of your five suggestions it would probably be him, but his milk is really, really low. Merchant low fat percent and negative DPR on Addison daughters, uh-uh. Storm just doesn't do it for me, especially sons with neg PL and especially neg DPR on high production Addison daughters. I am showing my prejudices now, but Lheros! Crikey!

I'm just jealous of all that grass! It is mid winter here and the grass should look like that (well nearly) and it is just so cold and we have had almost no rain for 4 weeks. Drought in winter? yep.

I dont think we have used Addison but looks like we could looking at that group of cows.

Re: Addison pictures

Thanks, see them now.I take it you were'nt too worried about fertility when you used Shottle on the top cow! Should be a great prospect.

A neighbour of ours has a great Excellent Addison out of an Astre.Apart from the fat that is a good combination.

Addison out of a Sunnyboy and Addison out of a Cash - Charity would be having forty fits!
Our best is out of a Mascot Corky out of a Mascot. Calved 3 weeks with her 3rd and just got to 50l, just wish she'd have a heifer sometime. I'd post a picture if I could work out how to do it.

funny that we found our boss iron heifers are the wetest heifers we have had in a long time and are out milking their dams at the same age.I would say some are borderline frail.and I still dont like their rump set up.They are however starting to body down a bit.
The high milk/input herd down the road also used him and found theirs were also frail and narrow but milked hard.

Re: Addison pictures

Just came back to this one. I'd be tempted to try Laudan on the stronger ones, would help keep bags and bone correct.

Possibly something on the jocko line for your mascots?

I think he would say they where examples of good matings.
If Marks Addisons would have been ugly Charity would have lectured him on "poor matings"

Lauden is a good call but I shall wait until he gets a "proper" proof.Same applies the German Jocko sons.
Jocko didn't do very well for us, although we haven't many.

Re: Addison pictures

They are the type of pictures that would be nice to see in the books. Those pictures you see in the books, advertisements etc are doctored, not the photo, but the animal. Those cows you have there are in their natural state, grazing, not fitted, etc. Shows they are made of something vs, made into something.

Smous, you scoffed at my suggestion of Lheros for the Addisons but his lifespan is +0.3 in the UK (3.34 or something in Canada) and although he has a high SCC score he actually matches Addison fairly well in a lot of areas.

Each to his own Errolston, I get seriously twitchy when Lindy or his devil's spawn is in a pedigree, just not a bloodline I would ever contemplate, plus crap somatics, giant calves, negative DPR and no fat.

Plus surely cows that big should work a little harder, they look nice in the showring but how efficient are they?

I certainly would not fancy milking offspring by Durham sons out of Addisons. Addisons are handy with their feet and to double up the Elton plus an injection of Dellia would in my opinion breed cows that you would need bodyarmour to milk!

You are correct that Lheros should work harder but as milk production is Addison's greatest strength I was banking on that trait coming through in the offspring!

Lindy did a great job here and we have the opposite opinion of him. As a breeding tool he was a reliable source of width, depth, rear udders and high milk and protein.

Lheros: No milk, no fat, high scc, low pregnancy rate, high lifespan scores.

Do people only keep them to pull ploughs or something!!

Not sure I would touch Lheros with a barge poll, certainly not on Addisons.

Craig ,Our Addisons are very quiet! Nearly always in the first few sides and not trouble what so ever.Perfect herd cows for us.

Our Addisons are not like that. Very touchy about being drawn and very prone to kicking units off and then jumping up and down on them! All of our Addisons have that tendency.
