I've got a 1st calf Derry who follows me around like a puppy. She hides behind my back when someone else comes near. She's only scored G-77. She milks well but is not at the top of the pack. One of the poorest cows in the barn and I think I would send for an ambulance if she ever got sick.
There is definitely such a thing as too attached.

agree wholeheartedly!
we have a 1st calf sexation (only live sexation dau ever in oz) who should be on 3rd calf that loves us to death, she is still milking well but I fear she may never get in calf again.

I'm very glad to hear that you feel the same, where do you draw the line i find myself finding it hard to leave the farm for long periods of time and havnt been on holiday in years! Am i getting to attatched?

I think it is irrelevent, really. There is no way to become less or more attached to your cows. There are ways to make it easier for yourself, though.
My father's favourite cow broke a toe a few years ago. We put a block on it but were pessimistic. Crazy beast surprised us all--she walked about with barely a limp, got in calf to the first service, made a good record, had a heifer calf, and her toe healed perfectly. Dad can go away to his meetings now without losing sleep because Shadow wants to hit old age just as badly as he does.
If you sell the cows that fuss--Jed's, for example, will cry for a week if they step on a thistle--and replace them with tough cows then you can dote AND take vacations.
We did this a couple years ago and it is amazing how much more time we have.

I still love my cows, just not as often since I got married. 
I used to think that nobody could milk as well as myself. I milked twice a day, every day, seven days a week for years. I loved doing it and enjoyed all the accalades that resulted from it. All the pats on the back aren't worth the sacrifice. NOW, I seldom milk, just do what needs to get done and enjoy life,as it is far too short sometimes. Yes I still love my cows as I have ten over 14 years old, more 2 or 3 quarter cows than should be allowed by law. They are pets and also Gods creatures, so live and let live. As long as their ovaries are functional.

the first offspring off the heifer i have half share in with dad calved other day, dead heifer calf unfortunatly but the satisfaction of getting the first one calved is nice. the heifer is a freelance off an 88 point capri dellia and is a nice heifer
