Re: Classification results

Currently have 3 Excellents in the herd. 1 by Ked Juror the other 2 by test bulls that didn't make it.Maybe we've been using the wrong proven bulls, maybe we should use more young bulls?

Damn that Addison bull, I'll bet you wish you'd never heard of him!

We had one that did 64kg at last recording, 32kg morning and afternoon, hang on, that's all the jars hold! I think we need bigger jars!

Congrats Mark.

Re: Classification results

Thanks.
We were told by previous classifiers that our Addisons were unusual but the classifier this time said he is seeing a lot of good Addisons now.
None of our EX's were VG as heifers , he is obviously a bull whose daughters hit the ground running production wise and get better and better for type as they mature.

We have one that calved early May and is still giving 55kg/day! She gave 14,000kg second lactation.

Re: Classification results

We feed the same concentrate both in and out of parlour. At the moment an 18% cake. The cow mentioned above is getting 16kg/day split 12/4 parlour/OOPF.The cows are still out night and day but getting a buffer feed of 3 to 1 Grass silage/whole crop.

Re: Classification results

We too feed the same cake in parlour & oopf's, a 21% "special", with added yeast, C16 fat and prop glycol. They all get 2kg in the parlour (1kg at a milking) and the top yielders get 15 kg in the oopf's. Still out in the day but in at night, as of 2 days ago. Buffer feed is 50% grass silage/25% whole crop (of which 80% is wheat and 20% is peas & beans)/ 25% maize.

That cow I mentioned did over 13,000l in her last 2 305d lactations and peaked at 70 kg last year. Just about getting there again having had twins (Mr Sams, mixed!) 6 weeks ago. She gave 40l this morning (had to drain the jar and start over!) but then she might have kicked the unit off for the relief milker last night.

Can't wait for her daughters to come into the herd, a Hillcrest due in a couple of weeks and a Shottle at bulling age. Probably go with Shottle on her again.

As to classifying, I doubt she'll ever make Ex, just GP82 at the moment but she sure helps the overdaft, looks after me more than herself. Oh, by the way, I love that cow (if you hadn't guessed already)!

Charryman, your cow must drop her milk yield quite drastically late in lactation if she peaked at 70kgs and "only" gave 13,000.

She couldn't keep it up for long, on twice a day milking her bag just can't sustain the pressure so she dries herself off a bit. That, and I certainly don't know how to get enough energy into a cow to sustain that kind of output.
The drying herself up a bit would be helped by 3 times a day milking I am sure, can't wait to see how she goes on the robots! Start up looking like early Nov so not long to wait now.

curious to now how many ton of grain these cows eat and its cost compared to the production and $ value of that production.Right now our 12% grain mix has hit $313pt plus gst and milk is 26 cents. We just locked in til june 30 on 60 t of high protein heifer mix at 335/t plus gst - looking at feeding heifers 4 to 7 kg a day of it.(yearlings to calving).I woud suggest our grain mix for the parour is going to hit at least 370 plus gst.

our highlight was lifting a elmcroft conquest from F72 on first calf straight to VG85 on her 5th calf.I have always liked this conquest and she is the only one left even tho the others classified much higher on first calf and while I thought she was a good cow(commercial view point- 4 straight teats, milks out clean, gets in calf, never has sore feet)I never dreamed of VG (GP yes)

Re: Classification results

We classified recently with the following results. Sipka Trish Durham was already 2E 94, but she was raised to EX 98-MS. A Champion 2 year old from the Roxy's was raised to VG 88, her dam is a maternal sister to Gloryland Lana Rae 2E 94, the Champion completes 9 generations of VG or EX.
A Durham 5 year old was raised to EX 94 (95 MS). Herd totals are now 26 EX, 25 VG, and 6 GP. Of the 26 EX, there is 1 @ 95 and 5 @ 94. There are 6 EX Durhams, 3 at 94, 1 at 93, 1 at 92 (2nd lac), and 1 at 90.

Thank you errolston. The classifier said it was the best udder that he has ever scored. She scored a maximum 50 for udder height, udder width, udder cleft, and fore udder.

Way to go Howie - you and Shilt79 both had great classifications! Great pedigrees to go with them too. THat was a BIG quote from a classifier - wondering who it was that said it was the BEST udder he had scored. These guys see 10s of thousands of cows each year - it must be special. Quite impressive and complimentary.

We recently classified. Highlights include a Durham 3 year old scoring EX 91. She is a new 11th generation excellent. We also had a Raider get raised to EX 94. A Milan and a Pinehurst Starz daughter got raised to EX 93. A Comestar Laurier 4 year old scored EX 92. Herd totals are now 30 EX, 20 VG and 4 GP.

Howie how's Sipka Trish Durham look see she went 94 with a 98 point udder. Any chance of her being a committee cow in the future? Who was the classifier?

Re: Classification results

She looks good. She was already 94, but got rescored 94 this last time and raised to 98 in the udder. He had to actually lower her in the other 4 breakdowns in order to raise her to 98 in the udder. I suppose as long as she has a 98 point udder there is always a possibility that she could be a committee cow in the future. She is due next June, and we should score next December, she should look really good about 6 months fresh.

Re: Classification results

Howie, from your experience what seems to work best on your Durhams? I have a couple with great bags, could use more strength, depth plus a little help in the legs and of course butter fat test. I'm thinking Charisma, Encore, Lee or Adolf. Anybody else have any suggestions?

JoePa the DundeexDurham cross has been really popular and I have seen some nice calves from this mating if you don't mind the inbreeding part.

Who??? I must be losing touch. You and Shilt had great classifications but I never heard of either of your classifiers. Are they some of the new ones they hired? I think I know all the guys that have been on for 5+ years? Was this one a good one? Was he tough or easy?

Re: Classification results

Classcow, Lundgren is one of the newer ones. We were very pleased with how he did. I wouldn't say he was easy, we actually had a couple of cows lowered in score. I can't tell you the last time we had any lowered before him. He made as much sense as anyone that we've had in quite a while. The thing that bugs me sometimes is when the breakdowns seem all out of whack. He seemed to do a very good job of getting them where they needed to be.
