Re: Generations of VG

Got a 12th generation who has 3 daughters on the ground. Oldest daughter is just fresh with her second and provided she setles down and opens her rib out OK should make 13 gens later this month.

Also bought one of the Pocohontis calves from Littlebredy that is from 10 generations, and quite a nice prospect.

BB how many of 12 are your prefix? we didnt grade up till 98 1 of the original grades went VG and we added 3 to it . Couple of purchases we have added couple on the end of 7 or 8 VG s bred in other herds . Stardale have a Vaakje that is 10 generations excellent ... i think.

Re: …

The 12th gen cow is a purchase, but only a cheap one, the daughters are born here.

The Pocohontis is from the same family as Golden Oaks Mark Prudence.

From the original families we graded up we have a couple at the 4 and 5 generation mark, but even then we're getting more throw-backs than potential next generation VG's. We just think we've got a family building then for no obvious reason the next generation aren't up to the mark. Frustrating. At the moment it's difficult to see any of the original families consistantly living with the PI's, and most of those are 6 gens or more.

We seem to have the other problem, none of the bought in PI families is able to compete with the homebred grade-ups!!! Currently our best homebred family has 5 gens of VG or EX, and the 3rd gen of this branch is an EX Astre who has an 89 pt Leadoff, and 86pt Lieutenant, an 85 pt Cousteau and a 90pt Storm and has just calved us a James heifer. The Storm is due in about 7 days to James as well and she has a Roy yearling, though it is the Leadoff that provided the 5th gen VG with a daughter of a Wade son (stock bull). Most females from this family have VG potential, i find it strange that the PI's couldn't compete!!!

Re: …

My Father was a herd manager for over ten years on a bleak farm on the North York Moors. When he left to take on his own farm his boss offered him the pick of his heifers ,Dad asked if he could have an old cow instead and his boss agreed although he was a little mistified!

That old non pedigree cow was the start of our Veronica family which resulted in Veronica 9 EX 97 and from that line we have five generations VG or Excellent.

Generations of VG

Can't get near that I'm afraid. Our best is a Lulu bought as a bulling heifer. Made a VG heifer a couple of months ago to make the 9th generation. I quite like her as a milker, despite being an Inquirer out of a STORM!

Update from our graded-up family with 5 gens VG or EX the EX Storm who is a 4th gen VG/EX calved a James heifer fingers crossed!!!!! Any thoughts on what we should breed her to next?? She now has James and Roy heifers and grand-daughters from her Juror and Gilbert sons (the ones from the Juror son are due to calf in spring and look very promising) all suggestions would be appreciated.

Sexation in the pedigree is the full sister to Prudence's dam.

The Emerson didn't take the best picture in the catalogue, but she was a beauty with a cracking rear udder. Wife and I had decided to really try to buy her, but I just didn't have anywhere near enough money for her at 5,500gns. The Rudolph made 4,800gns, the Airliner 2,200, so we saw the previous 3 gens milking on the sale day.

13th generation VG or EX.

VG87 2nd calver at 3 years 3 weeks old, just 10 days fresh. Can see this one getting better from where she is today.
