sire selection

now that everyone has had time to digest the 5% fat genetics we are back into mating - we have 4 tanks full of stuff and the boss needs some more!
any thoughts on sires?
(bear in mind that southwind, aerostar, mascot and blackstar not favorible here)
I think we need to not use bulls that throw high pins and back thurls and do give texture of udder.bulls can be progeny test or old.
so far we will be using more confidence, avonlea raider jetmaster, boss iron.
he's been looking at markwell rhyme and kendell,i wonder about smith and manat

Re: sire selection

Tresor is my favourite at the moment, more so since his proof just went up. but you wont like his high pins.
maybe jocko or woudhoeve superior migh be worth considering.
manat is a bull i really like too but he will sire some high pins

Re: sire selection

foxleigh with four tanks full of bovine gene plasm you sound like a semen reps dream, we call them PSBs in our neck of the woods: Professional Semen Buyers. Unfortunately with the way the industry has changed here, they have become few and far between. emoticon

Manat is not going to help you if you are worried about pin set, he'll certainly juice them up and hang a good bag!

I think you are missing out huge not using Blackstar bloodlines, his large variety of grandsons are proving to be some of the safest bets as they add second crop.

Re: sire selection

given that a fair swag of our semen collection has been from our herd sires and another chunk is stuff here on consignment or for sale to others.
then theres the flush stuff, the old stuff and the stuff that is in waiting ie. waiting for daus to calve!!
there's also illawarra, some jersey and a heap of fleckvieh and a straw or three of glenville herald.
and in the meantime....mating the uglymugglys to redpoll!

you have to remeber we are talking 20 years of "collecting"here plus the fact that I had my own cattle and tank prior to marriage!
