progeny test semen

how many doses per farmer is acceptible?

went to order 40 straws of a semex young sire and got told 25 the limit per herd!
informed the manager that last year we'd used 25 oceanview zenith and didnot get a single heifer.it took 40 straws of budjin empire to get 5 heifers.so we thought we needed more. finally i said send what you can, (we might get the neighbours to order some more!)

Re: progeny test semen

I dont know If Empire has any milking daughters didnt use him but used a cane of Ocean-View Zenith results 2 heifers 1 bull as a group they averaged 85 lbs at birth. Select Rep told me he was going to have Production and Type in February didnt see anything then. Looked him up today still no Type.

He does have a limited milk proof of +459 Milk +20F%.01 +31P%+.07

He better be better than average type or a lot of breeders are going to be sorry they bought into him.

Re: progeny test semen

Hi Foxliegh,

Any time I have bought young sire semen, they always say 25's the limit. It's so they can get as wide and vaired group of test dautrs as possible. Would you want to put all your eggs into one basket anyway?

Re: progeny test semen

eggs in one basket?
whats the difference than AIing for 6 weeks and then putting a bull out?
dont see that as a problem after all PT is just a glorified herdbull

Test programs limit the semen to one farm for a number of reasons, but it should be based on your herd size as well I think. A guy milking 40 cows will have much more affect than one with 400 for using 20 straws of the same young bull. There will also need to be enough contemporaries at classification for the test daughter to count in the bulls proof, i think I read somewhere that a test daughter needs 5 plus herdmates from proven bulls to count as a daughter in the type proof. (Dont quote me, uni was a long time ago) And test semen needs using fast, not sitting in the flask to minimise the R.I.P dip effects which occurs when daughters are calving for an extended period.

Re: progeny test semen

given that we have over 100 cows to mate to calve from mar to june and we are Aiing up to 5 a day 40 straws isnt going to go far , especially if they repeat more than once!!

Re: progeny test semen

I am not sure of that, but if you know someone, you can get as many doses as you want, even if a bull is marked as not available anymore.
