Virtual Sire analyst

You have been given the job of selecting 100 bulls to be sampled in the autumn of 2006.
Using the latest information available you must contract mate enough cows to produce those bulls that will return a proof in February 2011! Which bulls would you use, in which amounts and which maternal grand sires would you be looking for in a pedigree?

I would like everyone to have the opportunity to answer the question directly before anyone makes further comments so I will make this topic “sticky” but if you could all list your choices to begin with and then we’ll debate the results at a later date.

Here’s my choice of sires of sons followed by the quantity of each :
(assume all young bulls are tested clear of defects)

AQUILA PATRON LUCENTE *TV EX 20
BRAEDALE FREELANCE *TL 10
CARECA *CV *TL 5
DE CROB DYNASTY *CV *TL 20
HARTLINE TITANIC *TL *TV VG 5
LANCELOT *TL *TV 5
LAUDAN 5
SEPTEMBER STORM 5
SILVERPOST SINATRA *TV 10
STOUDER MORTY *TL *TV 10
STRUNZ *TL 10

(3 Canadian,3 German,2 Dutch,1 American and 1 British)

These bulls may or may not be mated to daughters of some of the following :

CAROL PRELUDE MTOTO
COMESTAR OUTSIDE *TV EX
CRICHEL PRINCIPAL *TV EX
DIXIE-LEE AARON *TV
ETAZON ADDISON *TL *TV
ETAZON LORD LILY *CV *TL VG
GELPRO *CV
JOCKO BESNE *TL *TV
KED JUROR
LUKAS
MANAT *TL *TV
MARA-THON BW MARSHALL PI ET *TL *TV
MAUGHLIN STORM *BR *TL *TV VG85
OLMO PRELUDE TUGOLO *MF *TL *TV
REGANCREST ELTON DURHAM PI ET *CV *TL
STARTMORE RUDOLPH *TL *TV EX
WA-DEL CONVINCER *CV *TL EX95

The bull dam’s would be made up of :

5 maidens
40 1st lactation
35 2nd lactation
10 3rd lactation
10 4th lactation or more

I expect I have missed some obvious choices but these are what I can come up with at the moment!

I believe that no bull should be used more than 10 times as that is the reason we have an inbreeding problem, like too many blackstar sons. And its reducing the case for some of these sires going Ka boom!! which could leave a stud in a bad situation. For example a bull called brock ,i believe some studs used him alot as a sire of sons .And now they are feeling the pinch.

Re: Virtual Sire analyst

well I would run an ad for breeders to nominate cows for bulldams.
My criteria would be age minimum 5yo(3 natural calves in 5 years).Would prefer that 2/3 or better of her calves were heifers.
Minimum classification VG with all categories being VG too.3 generation minimum VG pedigree background.
Production to be herd average or better

With Sires I would look at what female progeny these cows had to see what worked on them type and production wise and I would take on board what the breeder would use himself for a bull mating.
I believe this would offer as wide a genetic pool as there is because it gives cows by homebred sires a look in, would also give me a wide cross section sire wise as well.
one more thing would change proof system so all bulls start on 0 and there is no maternal/paternal pedigree influence.

forgot to comment that with the sires I prefer not to list them because there are so many I personally dont like but do work on some cow families that I would be guided by results of previous matings and breeders gut instincts

ok, ok,

When you aim to breed the next generation of AI bulls time is a greater factor than reliabillity as compared to when you breed your herd replacements.

Re: Virtual Sire analyst

Thanks, I appreciate the effort.
I’m going to put some figures on a spreadsheet and come up with some stats etc so if you want to have some influence on the results please list your bulls including quantities of each. There’s no rush so you’ve got until the middle of next week at least.

Cdl are you going to have a go?

On the dam's side I would be looking for: -

Preferably 12,000 litres, minimum 10,000.
50% of them 4% fat.
Preferably 3 gens EX, minimum of 3 VG88.

The bull dam’s would be made up of :

0 maidens
20 1st lactation
30 2nd lactation
30 3rd lactation
20 4th lactation or more

In practice I would use a larger number of bulls, but for the sake of this exercise the arguments to come I have stuck to ten.
