Full sisters

There are 3 full sisters on the same farm. deep pedigree, top family, lots of ex cows with high lifetime production. You are buying embryos or a stock bull. Which one attracts you most ?

1 : VG 88 2 year old. tall stylish, clean boned, super udder,
9,000 4.0 fat 3.2 protein

2 : VG 86 2 year old. Tall, slightly stronger, less style. Sound udder and legs.
10,000 4.2 fat 3.3 protein

3 : VG 85 2 year old. Medium sized, strong with wide rump. Good legs and feet, slightly deeper in the udder.

12,000 3.8 fat 3.1 protein

Re: Full sisters

Perhaps should clarify that this was brough on by seeing 2 full sisters yesterday that were both possible bull mothers. One 2 points higher than the other. The lower scored was 2,000 kilos better than her sister.

Re: Full sisters

I would take one out of the 88 pointer more my type of a cow. She sounds like a cow who could show herself and make some fancy offspring. This is my opinion not caring about index at all I would be much more apt to use the son out of the higher scoring cow.

Re: Full sisters

I would contract the dam!

forgot to say that I would possibly go with same mating as what produced those daus.I would also do an independent check to make sure there wasnt a dud floating around not mentioned.

Re: Full sisters

If I was buying one of them #3. The fact they are all V.G, puts them all in the same bracket, and I feel I could breed a showy animal from any of the 3. But #3 will make me approx $1,300 more per lact than #1. multiply that by 65, and you see why #3 is more valuable on the farm. I wouldn't buy embryos from any of them, untill I knew which one was, going to reproduce, as well as their mom.

Re: Full sisters

I'd take #3. I'd be happy to enjoy seeing the others in somebody else's herd, but we have to know our limitations, and in my operation and with my management style, tall, showy cows wither and die while short or medium stockier cows go on and on and on.

Re: Full sisters

All three seem good enough, just to be different I'll go for the second one. She has really good solids, a good classification (a farmer once said to me that if your heifer is 86 points then she is a definite VG, an 85 point animal could look 84 at times!!!) and has that little bit of extra strength that has sadly become lacking in the Holstein population.

I think its Dairy Strength you call it!!!!!
