Re: Ridge-Star Journalist
Pleased with mine!!!
Have just begun to hear lots of favourable comments from various different sources. I think that he may well be a bull that is appreciated more in the longer term than he is at present. Slightly more correct through the legs, thurls and rump than the progeny of some other Jed sons. Won't be the highest yielding 2yo but just watch them develop!!!
Can occasionally throw a thick set one if not used on a dairy cow.

Re: Ridge-Star Journalist
Journalist will be the heaviest usage bull here since United Nick. We have a good number of heifers from milkers down to baby calves.
What we have calved so far are about what we were expecting. Milky enough without being real fliers, and tidy heifers that look like maturing into real good cows. So far pleased with the decision to use the bull.
Skyreach, semen is going to be hard to come by because I believe the bull is dead.

Re: Ridge-Star Journalist
I heard from a fairly reliable source that the bull died, so I went ahead and bought another cane, and think I'm going to try to get one more. Also, he hasn't been on the pricelist out in the US since springtime. This is puzzling to me, as he is the most complete Jed son out there. His calves are quite fancy, and I hear good reports in the states and Canada of his second crop dtrs freshening. I also inspected many of his first crop daughters, and was equally impressed. What puzzles me, is that when compared side by side to Leduc, he gives nothing up, except for two things.......he hasn't been advertised, and Leduc has. And the other one.... Leduc has been used on everyone's good cow, and Journalist has been the poor man's Leduc. But when the two are compared, they are nearly equal on lbs. of milk, Journalist has higher fat and protein percentages and lbs. Journalist has a higher type proof, and udder and foot and leg composites are higher than Leduc. Also, of note is the fact that Journalist has nearly the lowest somatic cell score in Alta's lineup, and in all of Alta's lineup, guess who has the poorest score......Leduc. One more thing..... Journalist is positive .9 on productive life, and Leduc is a -1.6. This last figure really scares me. Should a bull that has been the highlight of Alta's advertising for the last couple of years be this poor on PL?? And he's not suffering from pedigree influence, or outside factors either, this is a 98% reliable proof. I have to admit, I don't keep track of PL, but when it's negative, and high reliability, I take note, and I stay away. (All these comparisons came from the bull's US proofs)
Obviously, it can be said that Leduc has made the show winners, after all he was just premier sire at Madison. And I don't dispute the fact he's made some good ones, but I think once you take a look at the numbers, and also take a look at the daughters that aren't at the shows, or never even stayed in the milking herd, it's obvious that Alta has been pushing the wrong Jed son. And they should have Journalist sons in their program instead of all the Leduc sons. I should make one more quick note.......one of the senior Alta analysts in the states, Pete Blodgett, has come under fire by Alta execs for the same argument - that they were pushing and advertising the wrong bull. When I talked with him this summer, I sure was glad to know I wasn't the only one thinking they had messed up.

Re: Ridge-Star Journalist
We also have calves on the ground from Journalist son out of an EX Starbuck from Maplewood Sheik Betsy's family that will go over 80 tonnes in this lactation barring accidents (currently just over 77 tonnes). The calves look fairly promising.
We liked the bull so much we went back and flushed the cow to Journalist and have 2 heifer calves as a result.

Re: Ridge-Star Journalist
I know it is unlikely to stay that way, but the interesting point there is that the worst so far is 77 points, so as well as some really good ones there are no absolute pillocks.

Re: Ridge-Star Journalist
I think you will be disappointed if you try to get some semen from Journalist - as from a UK perspective at least... there isn't any to be had!
But we are very glad you like them!

Re: Ridge-Star Journalist
Just witnessed a Journalist winning Res. Supreme at the Ulster Winter Fair, she came from England i think - Cumrew Journalist Debra, she had some style and a near perfect rear udder, would like to pull the front teats in a little, but she looked real good.

Re: Ridge-Star Journalist
we are OK with ours as far as milk goes. The first two are a twin from what wouldn't be one of our milkiest families, and compared to the other heifers milking around them they are actually milking above expectations, but you wouldn't call them flyers. Fat % is good, decent frames, legs and dairy. Udders OK, but would go along with what Mckeague said, would like to pull front teats back in a little. Both had heifer calves by Dellka Juror Gordon which shouldn't be a bad mating.
We have a good number to serve as maidens in the next nine months. At the moment I would say most of these will go to Comestar Lee to pull the front teats back in.
Be interesting to see what the ones from our high milk families come in like.
--- 65 cows - 9500 litres @ 3.8 fat, 3.25 protein. 25 VG, 4 EX
Also rear surplus dairy heifers + beef stores.
Simple system, grass based, no TMR. No full time labour.

Re: Ridge-Star Journalist
so we wont be seeing DLC1 on any company paid AI junket trips to the USA?
the wide front teat placement would come thru from rotate who was notoriuos for shocking udders.
I steered clear of jed back in 92 when larry martin of then landmark tried to sell me some . his first proof showed that exactly. I think the mating itself was sound rotate on the best sweethaven tradition to be found.to date we havent any rotate blood in our herd.

No you won't see "DLC1" on any trips to the US!
Also Rotate may have his issues but Blackstar usually compensates for these shortfalls... I am a firm believer that you can't get a silk purse from a sow's ear nor breed rats from mice!

Thats quite funny!!!
Are you mainly concerned about some "rodent" like qualities or do they suffer with crackling when you try to tune them in?????
