% Stillbirths

As promised here's a sample of bulls that are among the best and worst for stillbirths.

.............difficultcalvings...stillbirths
..................Sire...mgs......Sire...mgs
name............. %.....%......%.......%.
Progress...... 19,5... 9,6.... 20,9... 15
Michelin-Et.... 6,6.... 7,6.....8,9.... 6,4
Bubba-ET...... 14,6...6,9... 14,2...17,3
Ideal Ags...... 9,6... 12,4... 10,8... 18,5
Stoneham..... 10,4... 5,9.... 16,2... 8,8
Brett-ET.........5,1... 4,6.... 11,9... 11,7
Lynch.............7......7,4.......8,3...7,9
Brock............11,7....8,3....15,5...17,1
Jubilant.........12,4...5,9.....22,8...8,8

there are others that are as low as 2% and as high as 29% but this was the list that was sent to me and I don't have the names on the very best and worst.
I do know from memory that luke was one of the worst ever both as sire and mgs.
The bull Fänriksgård is about 2-3% for stillbirths as sire and about 5% as mgs.
he's a Rudolph X Belltone.
comments anyone ?

Re: % Stillbirths

I think I've got what you mean here Broa a bull such as Brock would be
11% difficult and 7% stillbirths as a sire
8% difficult and 3% stillbirths as a MGS

His sire,Mascot was 15% difficult and 5% stillbirths as a sire
   17% difficult and 1% stillbirths as a MGS ???

---
100 cows North East UK ... no staff employed.

8500kgs 4.30% fat 3.33% protein 82 points average on type.

Gibbons averaging 85 points ....whatever next ?

Re: % Stillbirths

I tried to copy and paste from excel but it din't turn out very good perhaps someone could help make it a bit more viewer friendly ?
I just noticed your second reply Will and you're right about Progress and if you read the numbers the same way for Brock you should get it right.
I'm on a real terrible connection here desperately waiting to be hooked up on cable but until than I have to put up with being disconnected every other minute

Re: % Stillbirths

Are any of these bulls broa mentioned CVM carriers? Looks like difficult births (large calves)is a big factor. Daughters with narrow rump structure could be also be a factor in MGS %.

Re: % Stillbirths

I'm not sure but I don't think any of the bulls listed are cvm carriers.
You're right about difficult calvings being a big factor as well as rump structure but more than half of the total number of stillbirths are from easy - normal calvings.
have you checked this link ?
http://www-interbull.slu.se/bulletins/bulletin18/paper15.pdf

There's been some studies where the calf was monitored by way of ultra sound and it showed the calf being alive and well up until the point where the head was passing through the pelvic.
the calf still came out dead as a doornail even though the heifer where able to deliver the calf unassisted.
that precise experience is shared by many breeders in this country.

Re: % Stillbirths

Worst we've ever used was Gillette Carlton, never did manage to get a cow to go full-term with him, they all delivered still-born calves at 3-8 weeks premature. By far the worst we've used for calving ease is a private bull, Grasshill Stoneham Sabre. Beautiful calves, we've managed to get them all out alive (7 so far) but the hardest calvings I've seen.
