Re: Stouder Morty

I saw some at a visit to a fellow breeder, they where in a pen along with some Champion daughters.
They where all nice looking calves about 3-4 months old.
I couldn't see anything in those calves that would stop me from using Morty if I could just lay my hands on some straws.
mind you it was only a quick look as time didn't allow for a closer inspection.

Re: Stouder Morty

I have 5 now, with more on the way. They are what you would call very sound heifers. No real faults to any of them. That being said they don't stand out in the pen either. To me they look like that if they keep growing they will be just fine.

Re: Stouder Morty

We have 2 heifers so far, both very aggressive calves. They look pretty good, though they aren't the largest in the pens.

Re: Stouder Morty

We had a very nice Morty calf on our expo string this year not ours but she is a sweet calf and she's contracted. Also myself I wonder about Morty he has a very iffy pedigree. I believe it is his fourth dam that is 65 points and there are more back there below 80 and some that are just GP I don't know about everyone else but this makes me wonder if he will be for real.

Re: Stouder Morty

Morty's dam is 89. His 4th dam is 65, the only one below 80. Behind her are three 81's, an 82, an 87 and a 90. Rest of the pedigree seems pretty solid. Hope he is for real, as we have a few Morty calves and several cows bred to him.

Re: Stouder Morty

I'm with Indy on this one, 3rd dam only 80 points, not that, that is so bad but Formation x Aerostar x Blackstar, is not what I would call a solid type pattern, this was an index mating period, and am sure they will milk like heck. Know lots are useing him for his type, and I hope it works for you, but this bulls proof will go down, and no I have no proof, just one of those gut feelings, think his pedigree is iffy, and the fact I think(Mace) is a joke. He already has 7,000 dau regs in Canada so lots of breeders are gambleing he will turn out ok.

Re: Stouder Morty

I like Morty for his production proof and his no holes daughters. Like I said earlier they don't stand out in the pen, but are VERY sound. I like their feet and legs and rib. Sure his pedigree has some holes but isn't that what we all want, improvement? Emory had a unimpressive cow back in his pedigree. He turned out ok.

Re: Stouder Morty

Your right about Emory, Aerostar is another, and although his daus type was avg, they milked like heck. Aerostar also put lots of sons in service, but to gamble on these types is risky, especially if you put a lot of weight on a pedigree. I am no longer brave enough, would rather wait til 2nd crop, to avoid dissapointments. The only proof I see on Morty is his mace proof, need more, what is his daus avg score (not age ajusted)

Re: Stouder Morty

Canuk, I do share some aprehension just based on the fact that I believe alot of his daughters are in California, which normally is a HUGE RED FLAG for me. This time it seems to be different. These are very consistant calves. Many times when you get a daughter group of a certain bull, especially a "High TPI" bull, like Morty, you see some variance between the daughters even as calves. These are very uniform. However I said the same thing about my Lantz calves until they were 4 months old, and then they began their descent.... My oldest Morty is 7 months old, and my youngest right now is a premature niece of Barbee M Juror Ito born 2 weeks early. They both are marked like Morty and have nearly identical features.

Isn't that always how it seems to work or else the calves that look like show winners are the calves that are born dead.
