Re: Highlights of 2003
How about cow family of the year? I would say that the cow family from Ever Green View had a tremendous year.
Cow of the year: I don't know if anyone cow stood out this year.
Bull of the year: BW Marshall he is obviously off and running toward the status of a great one. Durham would also be an exceptable choice.
Event of the year: BSE in Canada, it has affected everything from shows, milk prices, beef prices, and a renewed focus on biosecurity on the international marketplace.
Disappointment of the year: Ashlyn having mastitis and not getting to compete on the biggest stage. Milk Prices would also qualify as disappointing/outrage.
Dispersal of the year: Top Acres Brown Swiss, I attended this sale and was just absolutely blown away by the quality from top to bottom.

Re: Highlights of 2003
For me Carlow Leader is my cow of the year having seen her at Expo she looked phenomenal.Seen some Manats milking out here and they look shockingly bad <All out of EX cows!> would be my disappointment. Bull of the year has to Durham or BW Marshall both having died will make them more popular than ever but Ive been happy with Rubens having a great Louisville show and Encore daughters. Family of the year no doubt Elegance from Budjon-JK.

Re: Highlights of 2003
I'm not really sure on cow of the year because no one cow really stood out, family I agree on Elegance, also I agree on Ashlyn being disappointment of the year seeing her at expo before the show I feel if she had hit the ring she would have been grand and supreme

Re: Highlights of 2003
Cow: Carlow Leader 174 or Pine-Shelter's Lee
Bull: BW Marshall, Durham
Dissapointment: Renita Ranger Family. The bulls don't look to be turning out too hot, nor do the daughters. I think a lot of people expected more from her, but things could change.

Re: Highlights of 2003
broa, I defy you to state your point in actual specific references. You throw out general statements and then you don't back them up. Please tell us how you would fix the problem. I am sure you must have an articulate solution to your "problems". As for the "oowing and ahing over a few individuals" can you name one that hasn't either had a tremendous impact of on the breed or isn't a quality individual?

Re: Highlights of 2003
Do you really see the number of effective families as declining or just those that are not emphasized. If these undiscovered families are of any quality their breeders know their value and continue to develop them with or without contracts. These animals may not have the chance on the big stage but if they are true transmitters their genetic merit should not disappear with them.

Re: Highlights of 2003
Would an event of the year be Formation Erle setting a new record price? Over here in N.I it could be Maude's Gibson son selling for 11,000-a new record.? Could family of the year be Gypsy Grands with soo many bulls coming through from the cow?Just a few thoughts, J
