Re: AI Matching

Are you not milk recording farmerjoe? Do you have that facility in Oz? It will provide you with cellcount, butterfat and protien levels for each cow, as well as a few surprises, i.e. the cow you thought was good might not be just as good as the one you were just about to get rid off!!

Re: AI Matching

I would look at the cows (and herd) overall 300 day finished lactation and decide from that whether to chase more test % or litres.then I would look at the overall herd and individual type to decide what needed improving and then I would check pedigrees to make sure that they would click with what you have.

Re: AI Matching

I mainly look at the pedigree and if low test dominate I try to correct it, that is pretty much my strategy for every trait, I seem to get disapointed less often nowadays as compared with when I would only look at the cow/heifer her self.
lets say you have a cow with a good udder and mediocre feet and legs than you might want to use a bull that will correct those legs, so you find this bull that you think will fit her like a glove, he's only a medium bull for udders but for everything else it seem to be a perfect fit.
down the road you end up with a heifer with exellent legs but a poor udder because that good udder of the dam wasn't a well established trait in that family while good legs was.
if this is old news to you then i'm sorry for having wasted your time ;-)

Re: AI Matching

broa, personally in our own herd we look at pedigree of the AI sire first.we dont really look that hard at individual production because by the time you take into account all the other reasons a cow gets culled for a body would have no cows left! Then we look at the actual production of a sires maternal line and like to see at least a 4% fat.99% of the time the sire should have positive componant deviations.we like to see a pretty high type rating but 9 times out of 10 the pedigree does tend to indicate what type gets transmitted.

that goes along with my experience and that's some pretty good odds for the world of breeding don't you think ?
plus it's much the same for everything you might want to breed for.
