Great thread, missed it before today. Tragic to think that nothing has changed in Zimbabwe in 2 years.

it has. it has become worse. they also now have cholera.

I also missed this thread. I've talked on another thread about the time i spent on farms in Zimbabwe in 1992 and my relations who used to live there. it was a wonderful country, and hopefully will be again one day. Even in 1992 the good infrastructure that had been built was starting to deteriorate - poor telephone, blackouts etc., whilst at the same time Mugabe was investing in the military, despite no obvious external enemies. Mugabe's intentions were clear right from the early days of the regime when the problems occurred in matabeleland. i have met Ndebele farm workers who are the sole survivors of their families. it was always clear that there would have to be land and wealth redistribution in Zimbabwe. Unfortunately reducing the entire population to equal levels of destitution was not the best way to achieve equality.

I have heard further reports of farm killings in South africa recently. I hope these are not in your neighbourhood, smous, and that the government can find some way of bringing the crime rates down.

I was also shocked recently by an Afikaner who worked over here briefly. I thought attitudes like his had gone out with apartheid. Unfortunately I guess it takes a long time for old wounds to heal.

Re: State Of Play

Very interesting - I don't know how I missed this thread before!
We met a long lost relative from S.Africa recently. He was an engineer though. He seemed greatly concerned about some of the positive discrimination going on. He said it was very difficult for a young white man to get a job now.

Re: State Of Play

I had several long conversations with a South African who was over here last year.

He said that if you are white and you have a problem, the last people you go to now are the police. He described white people as sitting ducks - knew too many families that were broken into, raped, slaughtered and robbed by the 'animals'.

Hard attitudes indeed, but you can see why.

Attitudes like that do not evaporate with a change in political regime, they may take generations to fade into memory.

Some wounds run so deep, and the urge to pick the scabs so intense, that they never heal.

State Of Play

my son has attended a kindergarden that has some aboriginal children attending and I have noticed that it is the koori children telling the "anglo saxons"that they cant be a part of the play because they arent "goolagillas" From my son I gather a goolagilla is some aboriginal tribe. On a few occasions he was upset because he wanted to join in.This attitude from the children must be coming from somewhere.
Sometimes I think it is the indiginous who dont want the assimilation to be a success.
