Young Sires to watch (your choice)

One sire I am going to watch closely is..

Gaige Eland Thunder, out of the EX 97 Tamara. I have a daughter from thunder, and she is a one nice looking heifer. Long body, nice dairy character. The owner of Thunder said he saw some of the daughters and they do look good, now sure he sells semen. But I too have a daughter, and as I said, she looks good. Should see some daughters next spring into the summer, maybe sooner. Depends who used him, and when. Here are his dams stats.

Gaige Highlight Tamara 2E 95 EEEEE (now 97 @ 9yrs)
4-9 2x 365d 33740 3.9 1299 3.0 1007
Reserve All -American Aged Cow 2002
Reserve All-American Sr 2 Yr Old 1998
1st International Holstein Show Champion Bred & Owned 2002
2nd International Holstein Show 6 Yrs & Over 2002

Edit: Was told that one of thunders sisters scored EX92 recently at a farm in western NY.

Always a risk with a young sire, but I might get some semen, for what he is going for its a risk worth takeing.

Your turn emoticon

Jeff

Re: Young Sires to watch (your choice)

Please do not take this as trying to run the bull down in anyway........... but ....

Comesar Maestro only has 71 duaghters, registered with Holstein UK. Is this enough for a reliable proof. None of those daughters have calved yet.

I really like the pedigree, but then I would, wouldn't I ?

Do you all think Eland is sire father material?

Yep, i agree Buckeye!
I really think Budjons Elegance / Electra family is going to come up with something special. We probably need to use a bull with an infusion of dairy character to go onto the best line. Not saying they aren't dairy - just that to get a decent bull you need a sire father not a purely show cow constructor.

Here is another bull from Tamara, sired by Eland.

http://www.jlgenterprises.com/toughtree.htm

Gaige eland TOUGH.

Goint to be interesting to see who is better, Tough or Thunder. Considering they are both from the same sire, and dam.

Decided to take a look see. Tough classified 92, Thunder classified 85, he is a year older, should have a proof sometime soon.

I know, just kidding, It's because I don't think it is easy to understand if a young bull will be good or not.

I think that only when a bull has over 100 dtrs in 100 herds you can start to understand something.

I agree posal. I think it takes at least 100 herds to get some idea of a bulls true genetic worth.

Re: Young Sires to watch (your choice)

I used to find it interesting, trying to figure out which ever young bull that might be the next big name, but no matter how much the pedigree will make you drool, you just can't tell who it'll be.
if you're lucky you might pick a few winners and feel real clever but you have to remember that the odds for that is much better than, say if you where playing the lotto.
it is all well and fine if it is done stricktly as a mental exercise but if you pick and choose what young bulls you use than that's no good.
not only will it allow for som high profile young bulls to take up more sampling capacity than what is called for, it will also distort the chances of having a accurate first proof.

Young Sires to watch (your choice)

Simple rules of thumb to have success with young sires:
1. 3 gen EX (VG88-89 on a 2yr old score)
2. 3 gens with at least 30,000lbs
3. At least one GMD brood cow in those first 3 gens, preferably with 125,000 lbs+
4. Sire must not be a white hot index bull. (Too much chance for the sire to fail before the son has a chance.)

I use these guidelines and return about 50% to the active lineup in some form. You will be surprised to find how few of the young sires sampled meet these criteria.

those 50% returned would they appear on any high ranking bull lists or what is your criteria for deeming them successful ?

what about fertility, calving ease, Scc and milk speed ?

Re: Young Sires to watch (your choice)

Sometimes it seems the key is to get a family at the peak, before the enviromental effects start to extrapolate over too many generations. With type cows the original show cow seems to have better sons(I am not saying always) than her granddaughters that seem to look much better on paper. With index cows the same way, the first generations of eliteness are many times better bull mothers than the following generations after they calve once, live in a box stall and are flushed forever for several generations in a row. Certain cow famalies tend to rule the CTPI list in the us yet seldom produce top sires( I can think of one that has consisently good first crop daughters but every one has crashed and burned as the daughters calved a second time) as the records and the scores aren't grounded in reality anymore.

Re: Young Sires to watch (your choice)

I view young sires in a different way to most people most will say a young sire is a failer because he came out with a bad proof.I think more of the lines of the bull was a failer the day the mating was made.So matings are more important than phnotype of the cow because everybody judges a bull on his genetics not what he looks like.Any cow can have a decent son regardles of type or production so if u are testing from only EX cows this to me will not harvest the new and potential great sires that we require. If every stud in the world only used 2nd crop crop bulls then they would be able to test less and prove twice as many good ones because they know more about the sires than before. This will result in greater breed progress and cheaper semen costs to all.
