Cederwal Spirte

We have had many Spirte calves in the last 3 months and we have had a hard time trying to keep them alive. I was wondering if anyone else was having similar difficulties and what there thoughts are on this bull. Many of our calves are too frail and just dont seem to live more than 2 weeks but if they survive more than a month they seem fine.

I would think you have a problem such as rota virus or something like that if you are losing a lot of young calves, its unlikely to be the sire.

We had a similar problem with a bull, not Spirte, several years ago. Only seemed to affect daughters of that bull.

Its not a virus i ment that they were dying because we killed them ourselves with a bullet. They were just not aggresive calves at all and just were not good calves to deal with.

Yea we kill them because really they are no good to us because they are not aggresive eaters so they would probably die anyway

Re: Cederwal Spirte

Surely you should keep them & nurse them through, to perpetuate that trait in the Holstein breed. Then everyone can slate Holsteins a bit more and have a go at crossbreeding.

We have managed to nurse a few through like that and they never "do". I wish I had been as ruthless as you. (Daft part is, I am with the sheep and can see that has paid dividends).

Could be a lack of colostrum, do you make sure they get 3 litres in first 6 hrs?

I've always found Champion calves very difficult to get going but I've never shot any of the little sods yet!

Re: Cederwal Spirte

We have had the same problem with our pronto calves. It has gotten to the point that we dont even try to get them to suckle we just tube them right away. However, after two tubbings they take off and are really aggressive. Registered heifers are worth $800 a few days old around here, cant afford to throw that away with a bullet to the head.

Re: Cederwal Spirte

All our Spirte calves have been fairly normal, we've not had any more trouble with them than any other bull we've used. We used him along with Mailing on serving a big group of bulling heifers and we found the Mailings were smaller and more weakly than the Spirtes!
