Foxleigh,

What do your Lite Whiskey and Marquee calves look like? I've used a bit of Marquee and am anxious to get some calves.

Re: What's in your hutches?

125,000,

He's the Carnation Counselor son of the old 3E-94 Astrojet Muffie cow at Bill Stolfutz's Wilonna herd. Bill had a full sister to the bull calve in and had some sort of freak type death not long into her first lactation but he said she was the best two year old he had ever had on the farm....and I know another guy that saw her and said that wasn't far off.

to date we only have one marqee heifer calf but I see that there are a few more to come before we stop calving june 30.Im surprised we used him because we had used a counsellor son of our own heavily and he had over 70 females in our herdover a 12 year period(and counting)Donna is in the same pen as the TT bull, the integrity bull from country elie, a linjet from wilonna lee alicia,a durham from our lazy sir christopher and LW (light whiskey)Lillian.
She is no smaller or shorter(body length) or less competitive than any of them.Basically a good correct looking calf.I'd say the worst doer in this batch is the durham... but lil would match the durham for learyness.however her dam is as mad as a cut snake.(All our lillians are bit on the touchyside).
we now have 6 or so light whiskeys and they are much taller than expected.I think there will be some 2yo who will be taller than average and Geoff thinks there is going to be some BIG cows in time.I wouldnt call him calving ease in that while we didnt pull any the calves are big, long and tall. They are agressive feeders when they get going but because they are so tall I have to stand along side them to feed them rather than astride the body and this makes the process a bit slower/more difficult. The LW lillian,LW Gina and LW Donna calves are as standoffish as any durham I ever reared.More like the raiders I reared and Im wondering about the common denominator here(starbuck....astrosnort)But I need to think about this a while longer.
Both bulls throw basically correct calves with no obvius type faults.at this point the marque is much quieter than any of the whiskeys. But she would be one of the oldest this season.

Re: What's in your hutches?

Yep, I got one, but it will be borderline both on the calf itself and the pedigree whether it gets to stay.

Because I've upped my milker numbers I'm selling my surplus youngstock as maidens rather than taking them to fresh calved heifers, and the Allentown calf is right on the cut-off point. She'll either be the best calf sold, or the lowest ranked kept. emoticon

Well i'd probably agree with Ballivor, though our 2 heifer calves couldn't be more different ones a pipsqueak and the other was huge, bull calves have been on the bigger side of average. I like the 2 heifer calves though, the big one has a muzzle on her like a 2yr old (slight exaggeration!!) and has so much style, may order a little more of him.

Re: What's in your hutches?

Only 4 or 5 cows left to calve now and they will be having home bred calves.
Autumn calving:

5 Shakers (love these calves, 1 set of twins)
3 Kite (one red from a red black, also love these calves)
4 Cocherill (one red black from a red carrier)
1 AltaColin
1 Lordpres
1 Unknown (either a Ladino or a Duplex)
9 Homebred (the bull did better than dad at making heifers)
1 Solid stormatic.

Oh and LOTS of bulls emoticon
Wasnt there a secret incantation that someone found on the internet for heifers? emoticon
