Bambam and Cutler
I was interested by the mailshot today from Semex offering Bambam and Cutler. Both so similar in many ways ,as might be expected from their pedigrees.(Same sire and out of full sisters)
What did puzzle me was the price of £20 on Bambam compared to Cutler`s £16.
Given that Cutler has a better balanced production proof, ( better fat/protein ratio)and has £8 more PLI why the price difference ? Cutler even beats Bambam by 7 points on LPI.
Also would some of the experts care to comment on Bambam being +15 on conformation compared to +12 for Cutler yet Mace gives Cutler +2.35 against +2.29 by Bambam?
Obviously the two type systems place emphasis in different areas but presumably Semex feel Bambam is more valuable because of his extra three points of type in Canada, yet as a UK breeder I am supposed to jelouse that Cutler is a better type bull?
S`pose it all helps to keep the job fun.

We calved a Cutler the other day. Pretty interesting heifer at the moment. Tall for her age, good udder (excellent rear udder, but mum also had that), good feet and legs and plenty ofbody depth. I would just like more rump width at the moment.

Errolston, just wondering how it is that you have a first crop Cutler? As Semex doesn't wholly prove any young sires in the UK, do Semex UK customers have access to any young sire that interests them? thanks.

Kristin, Semex give out 5 straws of young bull semen along with some of their orders. It is pretty erratic as you do not always get some and we have never got to pick what bulls we want.
We are also milking a 2nd calve Freeman. She was used in this country to advertise the bull. She is looking exceptionally well at the moment, definite 89pt second calver and we are considering showing her at our National show in April.

Re: Bambam and Cutler
Cutler was used in this country as a young bull, and you will usually find that Semex will try and accommodate you, if there is a young sire in Canada that you would like to use then they will check to see if it qualifies for the UK, bearing in mind that the usual health tests mean they have to be 2years old before they can come in to the uk

Just ignore the UK conversion and compare them on their Canadian proofs.

That seems to have changed a little lately.
Last couple of orders I've put in I've been able to get 1 straw young bull at £3 for every 2 straws proven, and there's been a list of about 8 bulls to pick from.
I did pull in quite a bit of one of Buckeye's picks, Sunnylodge Sabastian, so I'll hold Buckeye responsible if he's a dog.

Our milking Cutler scored GP83 at 2-6. She is tall with a nice rear udder (it's mother's was awesome), deep rib and good feet and legs. You would just like to tighten her fore udder and widen her pins and raise her them a little. With a better fore udder she would have been VG. She is milking really well.

My 2 milking Bambam's are a pair of plugs!!!
Udders will last forever, cos they dont have any milk in them. They looked the part as youngstock, but now they have calved they are big, soft, lazy, no milk, usless sods

Bambam and Cutler
Our Cutler blew it's udder after calving it's second calve. It's mother was a Rudolph that lasted for 5 calves and did not lose it's udder.

Are they giving anymore milk these days ? I have a few to inseminate the next few months but I have a bull with 1000kg milk for them if I think they are going to be worth persevering with.

You mean profitable milk production is directly correlated to milk output and in turn correlated to the PTA of the sires we breed our cows to?? Christ on a bike dont tell Mayjay !!!

Re: Bambam and Cutler
We had 3 heifers by Cutler, all have been very hard to get back in calf - two took more than 5 services to hold and then held to blue. However 2 are now VG. The third is a barren heifer as she has almost non existant ovaries and our vet says she is a lost cause. All are lovely upstanding cows with great udders, but we shant be using him again.
