The short lived Blackmore, Dio, Glover, Powell, plus to be named keyboard player in late 1978.

What would Down to Earth sound like if Dio had stayed? Let's assume Dio would have more influence than Bonnett (who had as much influence as I did on that album).

This is of course very speculative. But being the massive Rainbow fan I am, I've dwelt on this millions of times. As terrific as Down to Earth is, songs like Eyes of the World, Lost in Hollywood, and Danger Zone would have probably ended uo being even BETTER with Ronnie. And I seriously doubt that, out of All Night long, Makin Love, No Time To Lose, and Since You've Been Gone, at least ONE of those would never have seen the light of day, in any way shape or form.

But I've grown to love those songs two (after having had the album was back in Christmas 1979). So I guess that would be a bit of a loss, wouldn't it?

Remember when Ronnie did some DIO songs with Purple, one was Rainbow in the Dark. And remember when Ronnie sang Smoke on the Water? I think that gives me an idea of what Down to Earth would have sounded like with DIO.

Down to earth is a great album the way it is.The perfect mix between the Dio-era and the pop-rock to come.
Graham Bonnet was the perfect guy for the job, Dio wouldn't have been so great at the more radio-oriented tracks.

Don't think it would've worked with Dio on that album. To radiofriendly, and a warning about things to come...

Naw, Down To Earth is when I started going cool on the original incarnation of Rainbow. Apart from Eyes Of The World it was way too commercial. 1980 was the last time I was at a gig, most of the stuff was from Down To Earth, it was no better live! I bought Difficult To Cure and Straight Between The Eyes as well, they were no better either. They took a big step sideways when Dio departed and ended up playing American AOR no better than any other US mid range band!

Dio would never have sung tracks such as "All Night Long" or "Since You Been Gone". He was clearly into hard rock / fantasy rock at that time. Bonnet was more into rock'n'roll...

I think DTE is a great album too Eyes Of The World , Lost In Hollywood and Danger Zone are among my Favourite Rainbow tracks of any era it was also to my mind anyway the last truly inspired and great performance by TMIB on an album and the tour was the last time I heard Blackers sound like himself for many many years (probably TBRO tour with purple until he performed and sounded like that again). Bonnet did a great job on that album! but I did not enjoy his live performances he tended to shout rather than sing most of the time and his stage persona was a bit lets just say strange!.As far as Dio performing on DTE im sure it would have worked fine whether he would have wanted to perform ANL or SYBG is another matter.Having said that Ronnie went on to perform a lot of radio friendly material in his own band a few years later ie Rainbow In The Dark,Rock n Roll Children etc when DIO went down the commercial route that he supposedly didnt want to do with Rainbow

I disagree with alot of this, but I respect the dissension.

Eyes of the World, Danger Zone, and Lost in Hollywood are musically just as good as (if not better than) nearly half of Long Live Rock 'N Roll and a half of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow as well (this is coming from a person whom loves 1975 to 1980 Rainbow above all other Rock/Metal). I'd put Eyes of the World over even the songs of the first side of Rising, which is quite the admission for me.

I agree that Graham didn't have the versatility of Ronnie, but oh BOY that range! Plus, he never sounded "girly" like Prissy Plant-y, which made him far more likable for me.

Again, this is all just my opinion.

Eyes of the World sounded smashing when Graham did it with his (and JLT's) Finnish touring band last month, Andy. The band played so well. You should see them some day. And yes, I've yet to become rich (have not forgotten my promise)!
