The Voice of Rock?

Does anybody know where this name comes from? I've always been really confused by where this tag came from, as to be quite blunt, he is not!

Realistically, that tag would have to lie with the vocal pioneers in heavy rock like Plant, Gillan, Ozzy, Jagger, Mercury etc. Those guys are far more well known that Glenn Hughes, and have far more distinctive rock voices than him.

Any opinions?

From what I've read, Glenn appeared on a song by the group KLF and they dubbed him 'The Voice Of Rock' and it seems to have stuck.

Yeah that's what the KLF dubbed him. Odd really as, stylistically he's got more of a soul voice, but meh...

To me, Glenn's voice is certainly as the same level of specificity as Gillan's or Plant's. The fact he hasn't got the same level of recognition is not linked to his vocal ability. I like Glenn's screaming or falsetto as much as Gillan's nowadays. I find his voice "warm".

I would have liked to hear Glenn performing "Child in Time" or other MkII numbers.

No way would I want Glenn to perform Child in Time... it would ruin his voice. I'm glad he still has one... I have a relatively high voice when singing and I tried to sing CIT in my car while listening to it on my stereo... and man does that song hurt your voice... OWCH!! How Gillan sang that song day to day without having his head pop off I'll never know... but it was DP's way of saying "Tear down that wall Mr..." well you know the rest...

As AWM & Beese have already answered, some ofit has to come from that KLF album project wherein Hughes was credited as 'The Voice of Rock'.
I think it really seemed to 'catch on' and come into more widespread usage after Hughes teamed up with Turner for the Hughes/Turner Project, which was sorta directly in the wake of Turner touring with the 'Voices of Rock' cabaret show (I'm not certain if Hughes was a part of that or not).

It was our honor and hopefully we were able to help with that confused state, Mr. Tait.

 Of course!
I 100% concur with the opinion you bluntly state, Mr. Tait. emoticon
