Re: Funk
Yes I heard it once now.
There's only some fool telling me in every song that I'm listening to the new Glenn Hughes cd Funk. I already knew that.
Have some mixed feelings about it, have to listen to it some more.
Thought SM and MFTD were better after one listen.

Re: Funk
So I listened to it a couple of times.
When I bought Play Me Out in 1977 I was really into (hard)rock. I expected something else with Pat Travers and Mel Galley, but in the end I enjoyed PMO very much. Maybe it was to annoy my friends who didn't like GH.
I bought all GH cds and saw him 5 times live and the 6th will be at the end of this month. Every cd he made was different. My favorite one is SM. With MFTD he changed to some softer moments, funk and ballads with strings.
With FUNK he follows that path further. This is because (imho) he has no rockoriented guitarist in his lineup (except for a few songs).
Soul Mover (titletrack) and Music For The Divine (The Valiant Denial) kicked off with a great track. On This album the start is less thrilling. In fact the first half of the album is quite slow. Some ballads and some funky songs (not heavy).
On the second half he comes to the territory of SM and MFTD.
Never Say Never and Oil And Water could easily be included on SM. OAW finishes with a heavy hitting Smith.
Too Late To Change The World starts with strings and very beautiful vocals and gets heavier after some time. At the moment my favorite song.
I think if the songs were put in a different order the flow would have been better. Further I would have liked some more heavy songs, now it is too laid back. And the arrangements aren't always too thrilling.
GH is a great singer but sometimes he is showing too much off, less is sometimes better.
edit:
the copy I had started with Where There's A Will, which appears to be the last one on the cd.
So Crave is the opener, a better song to start with, but not as got as SM or The Valiant Denial. Tries to start like TVD, but not as strong,

Re: Funk
i just got a copy of FUNK yesterday. it sounds like southern califonia in the 70's with modern production. i think to give new music a fair chance you need to listen to it at least 3 times all the way through.
i became a huge fan of glenn again when i heard music for the divine. even though i've only listened to it once i think this could well be glenns best work. its fantastic! people buy this album.

Re: Funk
Which gig are you going?
I'm going to Verviers on the 30th of May. Saw him there twice in 2006. On both occasions I had to chance to talk to him and he signed some lp and cd covers.

Re: Funk
I'm a bit hesitant to this one so far, but will give it more spinns of course.
It might come out fine. But compared to the great
explosion GTBB is, it's mellow this one.

Re: Funk
I'll be in Verviers too, and I appreciated FUNK quite a lot too. Not everything is great, but all in all a good album, way better than GTBB for me !!
