Hush - recorded in our rehearsal room...

Hi,

Brett here from the German Mandrake Root band. We setup our recording stuff last week although the Hammond had not arrived - in some limbo we borrowed a Korg which sounds weaker - compensated though by some great playing...

We made a sound test before going home for the day... the result 'HUSH' was quiet interesting despite only being a throw a way :-

Cheers Brett

Hi Brett.

I am quite the Mark 1 fan, and so felt the need to ring in on your recording.

I tend to be way too upbeat and positive to be a really good "critic", but for what it's worth:

I thought it sounded damn good for a throw away. What really is to be "thrown away" about it I'd like to know? If my band's keepers sound as good as your band's throwaways, I would consider us to be quite fortunate.

I like the upbeat and progressive "Kula Shaker" feel of the whole song, combined with unusually "clean" vocals for such a progressive rock treatment of the song. I like how your lead vocalist handles the song. Joe South/Rod Evans sensitivity combined with
Deep Purple Mk VIII gusto. A hard thing to combine.

The organ--- well what can you do with a Korg, compared to a real Hammond? I won't lecture you on that, because you already know the difference. When you guys get that Hammond, be careful moving it in the studio...watch your backs. I tweaked mine moving my Hammond last weekend, and at age 40, I'm somewhat concerned about the fallout of such pain and strain. Don't want to see you go through that. Even steller sound isn't worth hurting your body over.

As for the organ solo, a bit meandering at times I thought, but I liked how your keyboard player tied into the signature line of Jon Lord's "First Movement" from the Concerto for Group and Orchestra. Brilliant...and a perfect thing to throw into a song like "Hush".

I wish to end on a happy note, so that's all I have to say. Keep up the good work...you sound like your audio mixing as well as your musician skills are top notch.

Good luck on your future endeavors.

2008 sounds like it could be your year to come out and show 'em who's got game!!!!

Hi John,

Thanks, and yes, the Hammond is a ***** to get up and down the stairs...

Alex is a very good singer who can sing very clean, in fact by his own admission he can imitate Robert Plant or Freddy Mercury much better than he can Ian Gillan or DIO. The Rod Evens factor obviously came quite natural to him. The vocals tracks were done at a later stage - hence the doubling.

We miked up the drums with only 3/4 mikes so it sounds a bit central/narrow yet unintentionally we got a rather authentic mono sound. LoL!

Otherwise sounding like? No. Well, with a Hammond and a Strat thru a Marshall we sound like DP and yes, we play their songs - yet we stay clear of cloning DP as it is silly. We are 100% ourselves inside the DP frame of things or else it would be a poor imitation.

Year 2008 our year? I dearly hope so - we have 2 gigs in this year and then we shall see...

Cheers Brett

Hi!

This sounds quite good. Almost like MKII with a more modern sound.

About the singer, where the hell did you guys find Rod Evans? He's been missing for many years, and, suddenly, here he is?? emoticon

Keep up the good work guys!

I gave your song another listen, and I gotta' say I really like the clarity of the vocals a lot, and well.....do you mind if I record it onto my C-drive and later burn it onto a CD? It would just be for my personal use, but it is a nice version of the song, and I'd like it for my collection.

Re: Hush - recorded in our rehearsal room...

dear all,

we are absolutely delighted you like it - please do make copies of it - do pass it around - no problems. I believe Alex (the singer) has updated the song again so please download it again for the latest version. I will ask him to include a version number in the name of the file - I believe v2.0 it the current/final one.

We have managed to get the Hammond setup in the rehearsal room and yesterday 08.12 we wanted to record but my overdrive pedal blew its valve and I was left high & dry so to speak - we will try again tomorrow - there will be more releases in the next few weeks and in the near future a demo CD with full WAVE versions (not just 128 kbps mp3s).

Incidently we have 2 last gigs coming up in 2007 here in Germany. If you would like to know more then please do visit 'http://www.walmsley.de' and have a look at the 'News 2007' page. Details will be added regularly as sadly the 'www.mandrake.com' site is frozen due to issues with an ex-singer...

Cheers Brett

Glad to hear it's going well over there.

Where is the v2.0 of Hush? Is it accessible from your website, or does 2.0 replace 1.0 in the link at the top of this post?
