San Francisco DP Tribute Video from Dec 6 2007 !!!
Well, here it is!
Three songs from the raw video (slightly enhanced I think) placed upon the YouTube.
HUSH, LAZY, and WOMAN FROM TOKYO
http://www.youtube.com/deepestpurpleusa
Video is not broadcast quality, but for single camera footage with ambient audio from the camera microphone, I think it came out fairly good.
Update: Our bass player continues to add videos.....I believe there are five of them on there now...more to be added as the weeks progress.

Great John! Thanks a lot!!!
I'm especially impressed by the keyboardplayer...

Cracking intro to Lazy, John! Great job!
I think you said you had your Leslie on the night, were you using anything else to help get that overdriven sound?
I'm not gigging at the moment so it made me quite jealous!

Re: San Francisco DP Tribute Video from Dec 6 2007 !!!
Wow you really got the Jon Lord moves and everything
I'm impressed by your hammond sound, gets real close to JL's sound sometimes, especially during the Lazy intro.
A few tips:
Maybe you should put the distortion pedal that's on top of your hammond on the LEFT side of your hammond since you control it with your left hand and always reach all over your hammond to turn a knob. Or maybe that's what you want. You know, Paicey places his cymbals too high so the audience have to see him work a little more to reach them.. a little more showmanship
about your guitarplayer..
The guitar lick in Lazy is very difficult to play precisely the way Ritchie plays it live, and your guitar player doesn't really get it. Maybe he should play it album-style. There are DP/Blackmore tab-books with cd's and everything where he can learn how to play it.
But overall.. great job man! I wish I had a DP band like that. I'm still looking for a Hammond player who's got all the JL chops.. Too bad you live on the other side of the planet:P

Yes, I had the Leslie. It was to my left, off the stage, and the sound person had it miked (upper and lower rotors), and sent the signal into the PA nice and toasty hot, the way I like it! I was impressed that she was only 26 years old and would even know what a Hammond and Leslie were, let alone how to properly mike them with the SM-56 mics that most Hammond players like. I told her thank you for taking the time to care.
Yes I was using that blue box on the right side for my overdrive.
That chopped organ you saw me play is a 1947 Hammond BV with aftermarket Trek 2 percussion, reverb, and preamp. Unfortunately, the preamp they put in the organ is tubeless (transistor), so I use the blue box as an "outboard" preamp. It has one tube in it and is designed to simulate the point to point wiring of the standard AO-28 preamp in a stock Hammond. It also has a gain switch that you saw me reach for during the Lazy Intro. I also removed the 6L6 tubes from the Leslie and put in 6550's to get a hotter more distorted sound.
For jazz it is a bit of a tinny rig....but for rock, it is spot on. Also can do an excellent intro to "Blue Collar Man" by Styx with it. It just is real good at getting that sound....but the classic Jimmy Smith jazz stuff....not so much so.
Thanks for the kuddos, and taking the time to watch and notice.
I hope you get gigging again, it's something you never want to completely stop doing.

Well, that's cause it's a real Hammond...minus stock status....but real nonetheless. It was pouring rain that night, and I was hesitant to take it out, but I realized I wouldn't be happy unless I did, so it was worth it wrapping it in plastic tarp and duct tape, and lugging it in the back of a Ford Explorer.

Yeah-- funny you should mention that. My girlfriend said the same thing. Here's the reason I do it like that:
When I put it over the left side, it is directly above the side of the organ that has the reverb knob, the rocker switches for the chorus and volume, and the starter motor of the tonewheel generator. For some reason I get this ungodly 60-cycles hum when I put it there, so other than the floor, I have no choice but the right side.

Yeah, some of it makes for good showmanship, but that was not my original intent. If you notice, some of the video I'm smashing my hand on the box. At that point my leslie switch that was "velcroed" to the left side of the organ below the lower keyboards, fell off, and I had to use the foot switch on the preamp to control my leslie speed...that's why you see me hitting the box on Woman From Tokyo, and not Lazy...cause the damn toggle switch fell off the organ and onto the floor.

gr,
Reinier
I thank you for the kind words, but really if we had a choice (as a whole band), I think it would probably be better if we had weaker keys in exchange for slightly stronger guitar and vocals. Keys will always be an "iceing on the cake" position in rock and roll. The "meat and potatoes" are the guitar and vocals, and those are the things people really need to notice, not the keyboards. But with time, I'm sure it will balance out.

Well thank you, I appreciate that. I know some of the cuts were rough at best, but at least one can get the idea of what we were striving for.
