Question for budding guitarists!

Come on then, as a simple keyboard player, explain to me how guitarists can play

this

without resulting to having an extra hand grafted?
 emoticon

At the risk of unleashing the wrath of the anti widdle brigade what are the general thoughts on Paul Gilbert?

It's pretty basic practice scales and there is another hand acting as a capo. I was more impressed with the goober holding down the bar chords than the widdler playing the same box chord shape.
It also sounds like part of the run in Van Headaches Eruption where he playing the same scale by tapping(which is another way to widdle aimlessly)

You really must be living in the dark ages to even think of Paul as "WIDDLER" jasus you're stuck on one guitarist as the be all to end all of them.(besides yourself, perhaps!) emoticon

Paul is actually a fan and friend of Purple's, and no widdler, but can sometimes be descibed as "a shredder with taste."

Er.. I was aware there was a second person involved. My comment was slightly ironic.

I was hoping for a little more informed debate! As a classically trained pianist I understand the need to practice scales and, as I'm not too familiar with PG's work (he looks pretty useful from what I've seen and heard) I was hoping for an insight from many guitarists who post here.

I've posted links to my old band on here in the past, so I havn't got a problem with people listening to my limited ability but perhaps you can point me in the direction of some of your work, if it's available on the interweb!

PG always looks as though he's having fun and, to me, that's what it's all about!

A shredder with taste?

No such thing exists!

A decent guitar gutiar player, who has the capability and talent to combine melody with speed.

Malmsteen and all the other widdlers are not necessarily bad guitar palyers, but what they are doing is not really that hard. It is guitar masturbation!

I wouldn't put Satriani in that category, even though I am not a massive fan.

Thats all I was doing really, was recognizing Gilberts talent for what it is, as I do with anyone I think is decent... my cup of tea it really isn't though.

Good call. I can't actually watch the piece at work, but you're right in saying that you recognise somebody's talent for what it is.
