Blackmoresque Stratoholic confession

Coming to the realisation that I have a problem. At least now I can admit it to myself. They say that the first stage to recovery...

I want to have every variation of fender strat the RB had throughout his career. Some of the obvious ones are:-

Black , white pickguard, maple neck
Sunburst - maple neck
Sunburst - roseweood neck
Natural ash, maple neck, white pickguard
White, rosewood neck, white pickguard
White, rosewood neck, black pickguard
White, rosewood neck, white pickguar, Black pickups and nobs
Cream, rosewood neck, white pickup, black pickups and nobs etc

And so on and so on. Variations of mint pickguards, different pickups, die cast bridges, Thick trem arms etc. Also like malmsteen, and hendrix and Uli Roth strats. Definately a sucker for a nice big CBS era headstock. Give me a late 60's or 70s strat any day to a vintage 62 with horrible weedy frets and curved fretboard that chokes when you bend.

I have been guilty of spending hours on ebay fantising of putting together various parts etc.I have succedeed in aquiring 75% of the wish list and wont be happy until I have the rest. Maybe is a mid life crisis. Memories of staring at pictures of these guitars in the pages of Kerrang in the early 80's. I rationalise by saying that like some sultans had many wives, maybe I need many fender strats.Yes I know you can oonly play a few at a time and hate changing strings!

I dont think I am alone with my problem. And dont even get me started on amps and treble boosters! This place is as good as anywhere to make confession...

Ramble over..

Cheers
jon

"Hi, I'm Jon and I'm a Stratoholic" is the line, right? emoticon

Yeah, each of those guitars looked great and I can see why you'd wish to have a copy of each of them.

Btw, I guess you knew this but just in case, the white with black pickguard of the late 1970s is the same #1 guitar RB had on Rising and On Stage tours, and all the way to S&M tour. Later it had the black knobs, Lawrence Rail pickups, the German flag, etc. I learned this from Andrew Good's excellent article on RB's gear in the MBTP mag.

I'm currently playing a 1970s MIM Strat, natural ash, rosewood fingerboard. Fender Noiseless pickups.

If I ever wanted to buy a vintage Strat, that would be a 1970 white one with a rosewood neck.

If I had lots of money, a late 1950s early 1960s blonde with a maple neck.

The finest Strat I've ever played is a mate's 1961. It's so sweet. Fragile and sturdy at the same time. I would not want to play that all the time, but sometimes. It almost plays itself and always sounds great.

I too prefer the heavier 1970s style Strat for most music. It fights back just the right amount.

Anyway, good luck with your 'disease'!

EDIT: Forgot to comment the other stuff: I have a DiceWorks treble booster which I love. It can be used in several situations. The most handy of these is the way it gives a nice boost in a setting where you can't have the amp loud. It makes my small Vox (one 10 inch speaker) sound pretty damn strong. If there's room for another speaker, it sounds like a big amp!

That sounded great, Jon! Looking forward hearing more.

The article is in MBTP issues #25 (guitars) and #26 (amps & other grear).

Whatever you do, don't forget to post your comments on the MTC! emoticon

You've got the MBTP issues now?

Check out the Classic Years: 1975 article. There is a pic from Sweden, from the Stormbringer tour with RB playing the white Strat. So that confirms it was there for that tour. The only pic I've previously seen it being used live before Rainbow is the Paris '75 sleeve.

You can see a bit of it in the same article as well, a black and white photo with RB & Elf in the studio. However, the pic in the article is edited. The complete image is in the Didi Zill book, and the white Strat is next to Graig Gruber.

There's also a Telecaster present in that session.

Yeah, especially from the Machine Head sessions. But for the most part it is stage & photo session 'posing' stuff.

I try -again- to get the part "Ritchie's gear" of the Japanese book I have scanned. Lots of pics of amps, effects, etc. It's from 1982 and I was surprised to see one of RB's Strats had these "single rail" pickups already back then. The same Strat has what looks like a Tele jackplate. Judging by the backstage pics he had three white Strats on the road at the time. One of these might be the one he used primarily after the #1's neck was ruined.

EDIT: Still no new edition of the Zill book? They said they'll do another as the 1st edition had flaws (like empty pages, pics in wrong contexts...). Still love that book though.
