Re: Highway star cover NOW IN THE CHARTS!!!!!
Listening to your version again... your sound is very beautiful, very impressive! Bright, solid and very faithful to Ritchies sound. Far more better than mine! How did you get it? Can you give me any settings? I use the RPA (the first model, but it can't be that different to the RPA California I guess) What's this virtual VOX AC30? Is it an amp modeling program like Guitarrig, or is it like a POD?
Can YOU give ME some tips about creating this great sound? I'd appreciate it very much.

Stratman
Many thanks for your nice words.
Was done on the POD. I only got this recently so am new to programming sounds on it. I just set it to manual then flicked through the amps and found an AC30. Had it on 9/10 volume and drive about 3/4. I then switched on a bit of delay. Opted for a 4x12 greenbacks 25 watts. Then used the RPA California to overdrive it some more. I had it set with the Eq on minimum so not to clip the POD. It probably still does a bit.
I thought cool - this sounds like the machine head tone. I normally go for a marshall but had been reading about Ritchie using the VOX on this album. It sounded pretty good. It was a fluke. If you have a POD I could maybe see if I could save the setting in gearbox and e-mail it.

Hey Creamstrat thank you! I'm tweaking all day long and I'm close to the sound I'm looking for.
I also have a POD and I was beginning with the settings as you described above. Then I put on the CHOHW CD and tweaked along with this CD and ended up with the Brit Hi gain.
Have a listen to this! What do you think of that tone?
You know, Ritchies CHOHW-tone is the holy grail for me.

Re: Highway star cover NOW IN THE CHARTS!!!!!
That is REALLY close. Im very impressed. Those PODs are definately really cool. Especially for lower notes. Were you using the pedal as well?
I read on MBTP this weekend, that he actually used standard strat pickups for this song on CHOHW.I have got the CHOHW DVD -will give it another listen. I was always a bit put off by the bad vibes in that gig with the water throwing etc. Will give it another listen though.
I think the holy grail for me is probably Gates of Babylon. Also really love the tone on 'I Surrender' Lots of people slag of his 80s tone, but that was immense.

Re: Highway star cover NOW IN THE CHARTS!!!!!
Great stuff once again, Stratman! The tone is excellent!
Creamstrat, I think RB's studio tone was great on stuff like I Surrender and Stone Cold, but live it often left a lot to be desired for.
A strange thing is it sounds better on bootlegs. The same is true for reunited Purple. In fact the entire band's sound is fuller and rockier on many bootlegs. My favourite comparison is between Helsinki '87 DVD and NP. They sound awesome on the DVD.
As for PODs, I tried out a mate's Pocket POD and it had some great sounds to it. I only played it through headphones though. I don't know how it would sound through an amp. Probably still very good.

I think the PODs are really great for recording with but not great to play live with direct into a PA. Some pople use them as a pre-amp to their amps and get some good results. These tend to be people with very processed guitar sounds. Not classic rock. But anyway, I think for recording they are excellent. It is difficult to get a better sound using a mic and amps. This is what Im now trying to work on.
I agree with you about Ritchie live sound. On some of the 80s rainbow videos (including Donnington and the JLT stuff)it was awful, and why did he keep using that octaver!! I cant stand that sound.

Thank you Creamstrat. The sound comes close as long as I play Blackmore-stuff. When I play my own stuff, then the sound seems less impressive.
I was using the pedal: gain at 12 o 'clock and EQ full open. The POD strange enough didn't clip, as I expected.
I agree that those PODS are really cool. Sometimes I can't get the right sound, starting to hate everything that is modelling or digital and then suddenly I got a nice, sweet tone out of it. I alsop agree that the POD is exellent for recording, but is useless for live gigs on stage.

I like the vid of the Birmingham gig very much. Blackmore has such a great, agressive sound. I like that sound. But at the intro of Anya, the sound is so sweet, clean, but still fat. The bad vibes caused great, agressive playing by Blackmore. The song TBRO in particular sounds so intense, especially compared to other gigs of that tour, like Stuttgart.
It's a shame that he didn't play an extensive solo on Anya that night.quote:

Yeah, Gates Of Babylon has a great sound. I didn't like the sound he had on Difficult To Cure.
The greatest 80's tone he had was his tone on Perfect Strangers IMO.
Did you ever hear my attempt of Maybe Next Time? I recorded that one with a BSM HS-C (I believe) instead of the RPA. When I hear it back I want that pedal back again.

Thank you Rezi.
You're right about Blackmore sometimes (or maybe often) sounded better on bootlegs. There are some boots from TBRO tour, where he sounds excellent and very upfront in the mix (In your trousers if I remember it right is such a bootleg).

Donnington awful???? I have a version of Stargazer and Blues... WOWWWW!!! He's totally awesome imo. Both his tone and his playing... for me one of the absolute highlights of his career.
I agree with you about that awful octaver. It ruins the complete japan '84 DVD. For the intro of DTC was it great, but he used it the whole show through.
