Re: Testing Dawk's MTC

I have an RBTC, which is great for making the guitar sound fat when the volume is reduced. For extra 'zing', which it would appear the MTC may offer, I have a Boss EH2 Enhancer, which sounds great with a bit of delay for those Cal Jam Mistreated type sounds. I also use a Mesa Lonestar Special, which can give some nice early Blackmore sounds, particulaly using the neck pick up. The Lonestar special is an EL84 amp and makes one believe that RB probably did use AC30s more than he lets on.
I agree with you I think Blackmore used the AC30 for a lot longer than anyone thinks. The popular belief is that he used the MArshall Majors, which I think is basially complete crap. My view is that the Majors did nothing oher than provide on-stage fill, to make his actual sound bigger for the venues he played. They are not essentially guitar amps, they don't naturally distort and as standard than are basically large hi-fi amps. There are some people who make great claims for the Marshall Major on Dawks forum and predictably claim they get the "Blakmore" sound, which i personally think is probably complete drivel. THe sound we hear from Blakmore's live performances might be a number of things but exclusively a Marshall Major it isn't! So I'm with you, Blackmore has always used a small combo in his rig at the front-enf, becuase he knew/knows that way he gets a predictable sound. The Marshall Majors and the Savage 120's which later followed are oly there to make the source tone bigger/louder/drive more cabinets allowing him to have a bigger sound at lower volume which equals less noise. It's not rocket science an it's a technique used by lots of professional players for generations.
Also an as the below pictures shows yet again, Blakmore relies heavily on something in that Tape Deck, where ever he goes, it goes, even today, so IT is the REAL key to the sound, and the way he connects it an uses it is key. The Marshall Majors, and of course the MTC as clearly demonstrated here in independent samples, are largely irrelevant. The key elements are the tape deck an the combo mixture/blend, that's where it comes from.
Here's Blackmore again with his tape deck in what looks like a pub jam from the SIUA era. If that tape deck was not important it wouldn't be there. Blackmore sounds much the same today as he alway has, which is of course attributable to his playing style and of course the tape deck.
Now all we need is for Dawk to claim he invented that sound for Blackmore and was soley responsible for the tape an we will have everything sorted...............eh NOT!
BlackmoreGuitar: Ps. You can add a simple treble-bleed to the RBTC wiring and get the same effect as people here are attributing to the MTC. I have a customer who has done this successfully and HE claims it gives the fantasticly realistic "Blackmore" sound he wanted becuase he gets a bright but FAT sound at low guitar volume.

Re: Testing Dawk's MTC
Strange. You see the tape deck and saying about him using small combo. But I see a Major head on your picture too?...........
Once I visited BN perform in small cafe on Long Iseland. There were ENGL and Marshall heads too but he used CRATE Combo for his acoustic guitar most of the time. His strat was there too. Unfortunatelly he never used them along the night.

As long as you don't say Dawk did anything MIJF's happy to take a Marshall head for a Vox combo!

Looks like there's both a Marshall and a Vox head in the picture? Confusing, as always! That's our Blackmore!

MIJF
I have said here before that I like your RBTC, but I would like to make a point here. I posted about using a Mesa Lonestar etc purely through my enthusiasm for a great bit of kit and my love of THAT sound. I think that RBs early sounds were his best ever and the absolute pinnacle was on the Made In Japan album, specifically the Highway Star solo on that album. This is my holy grail of guitar tone. Consequently I am not too bothered about all the tape echo stuff, although I do also love the Made in Europe tones, (I think he used the tape deck there). What I am trying to say is this; please give the point scoring a rest. I did not want my post to be used as anti Dawk ammunition. I couldn't really give a yellow rubbery f**k about what Dawk has claimed etc, I just want some of the joy and the magic of those tones to be kept alive and can't see the point of all this negative stuff.
