Cheers KB!
The cleaner tones I liked, the overdriven sound was what I don't like at all. Just far too buzzy. I suppose you need to have other instruments to have that sound good. To cover the noisy buzz.

To obtain the sound you want and like with a Marshall you have to tweak the knobs very carefully. They are very sensitive, and you'll have to tweak the knobs on your guitar very carefully too. Took me quite a long time to get used to my Marshall, but know I have found the holy grail of sound....for me!

Re: "New" Marshall amp, Class5, 5 watt all tube amp!
There seems to be a trend towards smaller wattage all valve amps, as the makers try to catch the market for the bedroom player. This trend also seems to recognise the fact that a really good tone rarely comes from driving a huge amp flat out, despite tha many ludricious claims to the contrary. A smaller amp driven hard can sound great, in fact in many ways better than a larger amp, becuase it is more controllable and easier to locate the "sweet spot" where it gives it's best tone.
YOu shoul dalso check out Cornford amps as well, some of them are small wattage and sound.........amazing. All handmade, hard wired, handwound transformers, so pretty select.

Re: "New" Marshall amp, Class5, 5 watt all tube amp!
I love my Boogie Lonestar Special. As MIJF says lower wattage amps are very useful and the LSS can be switched down to 5 watts, (it has 3 modes, 30w Class A using 4 El84s, 15 w using 2 El84s or 5w using just 1 El84 output valve). It is a superb amp and I can get a nice distorted tone at very low levels for blusey sounding stuff. It has to be said though that 5 watts can be very, very loud!
