He does dismiss Burn and Stormbringer as weak efforts in his coverage of the year 1974 - only to say later that DP was great at CalJam thanks to DC and GH, so for him, it must have been the original members who messed up those two albums. That's as a solid argument as any other, all right.
As for CTTB, IMO it is a good album, but was a step backwards after Stormbringer. It sounds a bit forced, generic middle-of-the-road rock after the hard funk of Stormbringer. The only really memorable track on CTTB is This Time Around, one of the highlights of the band's long career. In this sense, too, Mk4 was like the Turner line-up (or actually, the other way around as Mk4 happened earlier), as Truth Hurts remains the sole highlight of the era. So for me, both of these line-ups are special namely for two songs, one by each line-up.

It's funny how we all see the same music so differently.For me,CTTB is a solid album start to finish,while Stormbringer sounds patchy and forced,with the guitarist clearly not digging what Hughes and Cov are serving up.I think we can all agree that Paice and Lord still shine on both albums.I love Hughes' bass playing also,but his singing is more controlled on CTTB,while on Stormbringer he sounds like he's trying to unseat Coverdale.CHEERS

You quite right, it is interesting and the reason we can have these discussions. A mate of mine dismisses all music as 'pure mathematics'. I couldn't discuss mathematics, I can barely count!

To some degree he has a point, for sure. But, everything that is build upon or contains any kind of logic, may be "reduced" or better - rewritten - as math. Just take away the surface of things. Poetry is mathematics. So is a convincing argument. Not to forget beauty. Whatever sepearates a beautiful girl from an ugly one may be explained with maths.
Nevertheless, maths can not fully (or at all) explain why taste differ.
And, more important, even if it's easy to reproduce the mathematical logic of a song, you cannot go the other way.
So who cares, really? What's important about a song is how it sounds, not how the logical structure of it is build up. If you take away everything from a song but the maths in it, there's really nothing left.

When CTTB came out, I was initially pleased that it was "heavier" than Stormbringer and a return of DP as a heavy rock band. However, as time went on and it sunk in, I liked it a lot less. Bolin's playing is somewhat pedestrian compared to his earlier work and the songs for the most part are simple riff rockers. When you add in the recycled music from his past (Lady Luck and Love Child)it's less then stellar. To me it sounds like less a Deep Purple album and more like the natural follow-up to The James Gang's Miami album. It has an American Mid-west feel to it and lacks the English vibe that is so essential to a DP album. Check out the intro to Standing In The Rain off Bang and then listen to Coming Home. On the plus side, at least Bolin played a Strat and kept the basic "Purple sound" formula intact.

The comments on this album are fascinating. Like many others in the UK, this was my 1st introduction to Bolin. I LOVED the album when I first heard it and continue to enjoy it very much (the Friday music remaster from last year actually sounds very good). However, having subsequently bought much of Tommy's other work, I have to conclude that his playing on CTTB could actually have been much better. I think he's holding back and there's something about the sound of his guitar on this album that I find peculiar- kind of like it's too dry (if that makes any sense!). I can't help but feeling that if this had been his own rather than a Purple album, then the guitar playing would have been so much more adventurous and would have made this an even stronger album still.

I think you hit the proverbial nail on its head,Oldtimer5.Restrained and hesitant,whereas on Teaser or Cobhams Spectrum Tommy really kicks a f*uckin hole in the sky.I wonder if he was already feeling band pressure to stay within the predictable confines of the "Purple sound".If so,shame on the rest of the band.If it's because of excesses on the part of Bolin,then likewise shame on him.Still, a top-notch album that's aged much better than the majority of DPs studio product.CHEERS
