Mk IV Highway Star

MkIII's version (on Final Concerts) was wonderful.

MkIV's
is... dispensable.

I remember it from the Last Concert In Japan lp. Coverdale trying to out-Hughes Hughes and Hughes never should've opened his mouth for that song (or that tour). But I like how the lp faded out with that continuous loop of Lord's keyboards at the end.

I think it's the same loop that you hear at the end of the MkIII Final Concerts version... Did I say it's a great version?

I get the impression that nobody really wanted to play that song, they just felt abliged.

Generally the Mk4 stuff is performed really well, but they played the Mk2 stuff rather half-arsed...

Yeah, I kinda like that one as well (available in hugely superior sound quality on Live in Paris!). The part I actually like the most is the guitar trashing: You can hear what IP, GH and JL are up to, and the guitar feedbacking sounds pretty harmonic on top of it.

Really horrible. Hughes can barely sing at all and the rest just don't care. You'd get better from a tribute band. I'd forgtten how embarrassing Mark 4 could be. I say this as a Tommy Bolin fan. Great guitar player in the wrong band, destroyed by drugs.

I like MKIV's version on "This Time Around Live in Japan". Paice's drums when it gets kind of funky are great.

To be fair, Hughes was only vocally irratic because of drugs aswell. During some points he sang great during Mk4 (Gettin' Tighter and This Time Around), but vocally Mk4 was a let-down. Cov's voice was pretty bad for most of it aswell.

A real shame considering the fact that had they all been at peak performance they could have had 3 amazing and varied singers...

I agree. A real shame indeed. Another of rock music's 'if onlys'.
