Re: The best quality S&M concert
I'm in agreement with Witchy Nightmare, Sixty Nine, Killer Bananas & JSA1 here - band, instrumentally, were at some of their collective peaks during the S&M tour, playing absolutely wonderfully & beautifally together...as said, and also in my non-humble opinion, the only 'black mark' against DP for this period was the choice of vocalist to replace Gillan.

Re: The best quality S&M concert
I feel JLT was good on the new material and on certain old tracks, Burn BN, SOTW but awful on the PS tracks. Also lamentable in between songs.

JLT aquitted himself very well on the S&M tour. The band was hot and Turner sounded much better than the hacking and wheezing Gillan had sounded in the Eighties and early-to-mid-Nineties.
A lot of people here hammer on Turner, but he has always kept his voice in shape and is very consistent. With Gillan, even to this day, you never know which version will show-up. Like him or not, you know what you are going to get with JLT.
That's because Gillan had to actually sing on some form of regular basis. Gillan had Blackmore watching him like a hawk for 5 years, got sacked, and under all the pressure from Blackmore and drinking, his voice eventually went. But any and I mean any show from the PS or HOBL tour blows away vocally anything Turner ever did. That's like saying you could put a 90 year old with a lung defect on stage and it's better simply because you know what you're getting.

Re: The best quality S&M concert
Just listened the boot from Helsinki concert and the way mk5 play 'Burn' is the reason why I think they are the best band in the world. Particularly Blackmore, just wicked.

Re: The best quality S&M concert
About Gillans voice, I found a DVD bootleg on the net from their show in Koln, Germany, 26.7.2008. His voice sounds far better now than on fx the Battle tour. They did a powerful version of The Battle Rages On, and Gillan had no problems singing it better than he did back then. He was surprisingly good throughout the show, and so was the band. The only problem was Highway Star. They did it way to late in the show (as they usually do now), and HS is way to hard to sing that late in the show. But...that's the only "bad" thing I can say about the Koln show, and that is from judging by a bootleg DVD. Tells a lot about both Gillan and the band I would say!

I go a little bit off topic here
Cologne was one show out of many. Siegen for example has been, according to THS German forum, a catastroph. It's written there in the German forum 'cause nobody else can understand it. That's what the writer said who praised Cologne too.
Here and there Gillan has a good day. Is that enough? (Rhetorical question)
It's a lottery and the chance to catch a good Gillan and frieds show becomes less and less.

I won´t reduce the current "vocal situation" and blame Gillan only. Attending a DP show with Blackmore was a lottery as well. I recall several oscassions when Ritchie did not care at all one night and played simply stunning the other night (for whatever reason).
Back to the question in this thread.
I second the recommendation about the Freiburg show - the band was simply amazing and you can find easily a perfect sounding recording on the net or your bootleg dealer next door.
Actually there were 3 gigs in row which were brilliant: Freiburg, Würzburg and Zürich (all of them include a guitar smash).

Re: The best quality S&M concert
Sure, though I don't understand what Blackmore has to do with the current line up. He isn't in the band anymore. You know?

It was a "lottery" back then as it is, according to you, now catching a good show. Before it was Blackmore (says Strangerinusall), now it's Gillan (says you).
So be it says I

When you like to compare:
One get more bad Gillan shows today than Blackmore ever played in Purple
