I use the word "earned" because it's always bothered me a little when people title topics like these with "deserve". Respect , to me, is something to be earned. Semantics, but there it is.
Anyway, what's the forum's view on this? Has he earned any more respect from people since '91?
Ed, just on the respect thing: I'd agree with you if you consider that any human being earns respect from the moment he/her exists. It's up to him/her to keep this respect value, to enhance it or to lose it, by his/her act towards the world.
It's a little bit like in some school, where they say: everybody's got A+ right from the start. All you have to do is to keep it...
To me, human beings deserve the respect they grant to the others.
I guess I view it like I view the right to life issue, Al - no one & nothing has a right to anything; I will agree that everyone & evereything should have a right to a decent chance, though.
I think with this: "To me, human beings deserve the respect they grant to the others", we're back to the earning aspect again - which is fine with me...in all seriousness, I'll agree that there is a modicum of respect that humans should & could (if they're willing) pay one another; the issue seems to be that humans can't agree on & stick with a standard modicum.

My point is that since the great State constitutions of the XIX Century, including the US, men are born as rights holders. They just have to exist to enjoy fundamental rights & freedoms: right to live, freedom of speech, of association, the fundamental and undisputable right to own a red Dodge Charger... (no sorry, this one was in my dreams last night)...
