Satriani with Deep Purple

Just listening to some 1994 bootlegs with Joe Satriani, I must say his solo on Child in Time is as good as Ritchie's live efforts - if not better.

I liked his playing with Purple very much. What a pity that he left.

Joe was a good fill-in but I don't agree that his solos are as good as RBs. He doesn't have the lightness of touch, IMO.

Not really. Blackmore's impro's in CIT are far superior. Better constructed with more control and some real emtions in it. I've heard some version of Joe's where he would just tap for 2 minutes, when he didn't he could not rise up to Blackmore. Maybe in a pure techniqual sence he was better, but not by much.

Technically, Joe is better. But that's not the point is it?

As far as which guitarist's live solo work in any particular track is concerned, I'd guess at the end of the day whichever guitarist is chosen is merely that chooser's subjective choice - fair enough, I say.
As far as Satriani 'replacing' or 'subbing' with DP in the wake of Blackmore's '93 departure, I have always & still maintain that a better choice would've been & was a virtual impossibility.
Yes, it's a damn shame that Satch didn't remain long enough for at least one studio album and a (more) extensive world tour...

I'm not sure that a DP studio album with Satch would have worked out well. Listen to his solo work, his musical paths are completely different to those of Deep Purple.

However, I respect his live work with DP a lot. There wasn't as much improvisation as Ritchie did, but as an instant replacement he did an excellent job. I met him backstage after the Dortmund show, he's a nice guy too.
