Maybe a studio album by DP with Satriani wouldn't've worked out - still a damn shame that we'll never know for sure.
As for completely different 'musical paths' - couldn't (& can't) much the same statement be made concerning DP & the eventual choice as 'new' guitarist, Steve Morse? That seems to have worked out okay (at least).
