Satch vs Morse
For my Money Blackmore is always the best line up BUT I would have loved it if Satch had been able to stay on. I realize there were contractual conflicts, but I think with him Purple would have been significantly better than they are with Morse.

Re: Satch verse Morse
I´ll go for Satch too, no doubt. (Or a change in the vocal department)

Re: Satch vs Morse
Due to one of those inexplicable oversights in life I only the other day first heard Satriani with DP - the Battle. And as much as I like Morse I really liked both his sound and his playing. I can't really guess what his songwriting contributions would have been lik,e but I too would have liked him to have a go. All academic of course.

Re: Satch vs Morse
Sorry, can't vote as I've never heard DP with Satriani. Which is a pity, it would be interesting. Well, someday!

Re: Satch vs Morse
Al Bundy would have been better than Blackmore, Bolin, Satch and Morse altogether!

Re: Satch vs Morse
I haven't heard DP with Satch. But Adrian Smith should've been made a memeber instead of Morse.

Re: Satch vs Morse
Ultimately a question we can't answer. While I have The Battle, and agree Joe sounds great on it, here's the dilema that I see. Because he knew it was only a fill-in gig, I think he kept the tone and playing as close to the original as possible. Now, had he known that he was a permanent member, would he have let more of his own stylings come into the sound? And what would an album with him have sounded like? Can't answer that.
And my opinion on Joe is that while I can recognize that he is a tremendous player, his material ends up boring me to tears. How would it have worked in a real band environment, when the name on sign was not his?
While it would have been interesting to see the result, I am altogether happy with the band as it is with Mr Morse.

Re: Satch vs Morse
I agree with you Rick. Satch was brilliant for the short time he was with the band. As a permanent member and writer...well, I can just say that none of his own material
is that exciting to my ears. I liked Surfing with the Alien,
and I think I have Dreaming #11 too. Which I bought when I started playing guitar a little more seriously. Haven't listened to it in years (and haven't bothered with anything else either)
one of my friends has his complete catalogue but it's too boring for me.
It's possible the Purple guys would have brought something else out of him, something better, but that's just speculation.
I enjoy what Steve has done with the band. And I seriously doubt if Joe would have lasted ten years in the band. I don't think he was that excited about being a permanent member, though he obviously enjoyed playing with them.
