There was a guitar magazine (it may have been "Guitar") which featured Ritchie circa SIUA. They asked for his opinion on Satriani and Morse, and he was complimentary about both of them.

From memory, he said that he'd bought Surfing With The Alien and listened to the first few tracks and had been knocked out by Satch's playing. However he said that when he got to the end of side 1 (vinyl) he didn't play side 2, he just wanted to play side 1 again. emoticon

He said that he liked Morse in the Dregs, hadn't heard him in Purple, but was sure he was doing great because he's a brilliant player. "All that fast country-picking" **

** Hope remorseless isn't reading this emoticon

I´ve also read in interviews only good thoughts from Blackmore of the other too players. In particulary Morse.

He said something like "I can´t understand how he can cope with those other guys" meaning that the rest of DP is not up to the standard of Morse, and that particulary Gillan is unprofessional by comparision.

Did he actually say that? Or is it just your own reading of it?

I've read that, too. He did not mention Gillan spesificly in the interview I read, but about the band in general.

I read that too, but in my memory he said something like (after side 1 was ended): "Wow, that's good. What shall I play next?"
Like he was bored after three or four songs of it.
There are some amazing guitarists who play really awesome, but they don't 'catch' me. I don't know what it is. I guess Blackmore felt the same way about Surfing With The Alien.

Blackmore: Satriani good is very, but too goodmaybe . There's no chance of him make mistake. Yourent listening to his solo and saying "is he going to make it..is he" too much polish.

That's how I remember it, too.

Me too. Didn't Blackmore say something to the effect that too much instrumentation bored him by a certain point?
Anyway, I believe Blackmore has been pretty consistent in complimenting both Satriani & Morse as players, much as he was about Bolin back in the '70s. I've always given Blackmore credit for pretty much refusing to get into a sort of 'pissing contest' about such things, like comparing how any of the 'replacements' have interpreted/played the material he helped create & make famous to his original treatments. I don't quite 100% buy his claims that he never hears/heard it - I feel he's trying to appear to be too indifferent, if you know what I mean - but Blackmore - again, to his credit - does exercise discretion about appearing to be unnecessarily critical.

I agree Ed.

And I can't believe either that Gillan didn't ever hear to but a couple of Mk4 tracks, meaning no Mk3 at all.

The only negative-ish comment I've heard from RB concerning fellow guitarists was in the Tommy Vance interviews of 1984 where he said that while he admires Page as a writer and inventive in studio, he isn't such a brilliant guitarist. By this I think he meant as a solo guitarist.

RB has also said, from late 1970s on that he is insecure as a player, and when asked whether he'd like to play with some other guitar greats, he said that he couldn't do it, he'd be too nervous.

My believe is that this is the (main) reason why he didn't accept the invitation to the Stratocaster Anniversary concert (shortly after, Fender ceased the production of the Custom Shop RB signature model...).
