Montreux 2006
Recently got the cd and dvd, and this gig looks and sounds awesome. Shame the encore aren't on the cd, though.
The jazz intro to smoke is inspired and shows off the band's talent and versatility. Fantastic.
And when michael Bradford comes on to play guitar for the encores IG introduces him by name and then adds 'better known as Richie Moreblack'!!! LOL.
IG's voice sounded a bit strained at times but overall a brilliant gig. I wish I'd been there!

For all of it's flaws, it's still as stunning as it gets.
The Montreux show dazzles with great effect, for those who want to see them in a large gig atmosphere, regardless of Gillan being a bit all over the place vocally, and the layered effects he has used in that auditorium since 96.
It's still easy on the eyes and ears.
The CD really challenges just about any live release of theirs since the 70's, as far as I'm concerned, because of the mentioned vocal effects, otherwise he would sound worse than he did on NP, but together with the band playing so technichally well, it's a good example of them at this time, and could have been much worse.
I don't know who was in charge of the sound after the recording, but it has a warm mix, and I like it, as where the FM broadcast had no final mix, which put the icing on the cake for me, so I'm glad I actually decided to listen to it.
But if I have one complaint, it has to be the omission of songs and some of the banter.
Now, the HRC bonus DVD!:
This is the ulitmate Purple lovers dream, if not, feel free to correct me.
Right up within inches of their faces, a cam within a foot or two above Ian Paice, yet some rawness left in to boot.
Looks like something between a great bootleg, and a pro shot event, just what the doctor ordered, enough to keep anyone happy for a long time.
Here you have the band on what must have been a week or two's rest, or so it seems, Gillan keeping key for most of the gig, which is rare these days, but he was in such fine form, I really am glad they filmed this show, and released it.
And the sound is yet again spot on and then some, very warm mix, as good as it possibly can get!
Buy it, you will not be completely dissapointed, if at all, especially when the bonus DVD is worth the price alone, in fact it's a priceless piece of film.
But I hate to say this: if you don't have surround, you will only get the visual effects offered, as I have listened to the HRC DVD in stereo, and it hasn't anywhere near the depth, and Gillan clearly sounds a bit flat, surround sound would not exist if it wasn't highly effective, and the recording was processed for it in the first place, so thats why you only get half the value if you don't have what it was designed for.
It's what they call true 5.1 and DTS, because it was recorded in multi channel, not simulated afterward.
The HD factor is an even better example to give, my god how much better good looks.
It just makes the difference, it wouldn't be recorded this expensive way for nothing, but it runs the risk of being accused of overproduction, by those who don't use such technology, but it would help to listen in surround before commenting about that point.
It's only fair to do that.

I think that it rocks. It is almost widdle-free, which is amazing.
Gillan sings the new stuff very well, but 'Highway Star' and 'Space Truckin' aren't so hot, vocally. What is with that enunciation on HS? Yech. ST also has some strange pronunciations. "...every die". Or is it dai? Whatever. He does a nice job on the rest of the tunes, despite being somewhat ragged at times on the 'Machine Head' stuff. Maybe he should sing the MKIIa tunes the way that he does on the newer stuff. It would be an improvement.
Either way, HS is probably the best version that I have heard since the early part of the reunion and almost as good as the original MKII live versions. Morse actually sounds inspired and brings it closer to how Blackers may have played it back in the day. It is the hottest that I have heard it played in a long time.
Nice effort by the band, despite Gillan's new-found style on some of the older tunes.

They should never close a show with Highway Star! The tune is to hard for Gillan to sing that late in the show. They should go back to use it as the opener, or at least much earlier in the show.
At age 62 you got to be smart
