Re: Best MK III live
MIE, hands down for its huge, powerful sound! And a great cover to boot. I remember being completely awestruck when IP got the YFNO riff going after Jon's growling organ intro. And DC:s voice on Mistreated! And the great versions of Burn and Stormbringer. It's a masterpiece from start to just before the end -they could have left out that dumb tape loop trick at the end.

Re: Best MK III live
MIE is my favourite. I have my own personals reason for it, you see when I got it, everybody was still going on about MIJ. EVERYBODY had it, and everybody was talking about it when it came to DP. It was very popular and it buged me, as I owned Powerhouse at the time and I thought it was better (based on those live numbers). So one day I am at a store, and what do I see, Deep Purple: Made In Europe. Big lovely LP. Well, thats interesting I thought. So I buy it, put it on, and I am blown away first of all, by the SOUND. Oh how that guitar intro, DC's ´´Rock And Roll`` and the first bars of the Burn riff bring back memories! Great version of LDD and SB, but to me ´´Your own, your very own YOU FOOL NO ONE`` took the prize. It is still my favourite DP live track. I could care less if the ´´blitz`` guitar solo is from Paris and the ending is cut short. I love the intro (so sublime compared to the other's I have heard over the years), Blackmore's intro is great and his solo (before the blitz) is honestly the best YFNO solo I have ever heard.
So overall, It is THE most underrated DP live album. It has a great sound, most of the performances are great and it is overall a very good mk3 representation. Of course it could have better. But one of things I like the most is the fact that we don't get to hear GH in betwen songs as we do in LIP 75. GH ruins that product for me.
And about the loops, who cares? As long as there are NO overdubs.

A great bassplayer sure, a great singer? Yes he has become one over the years, but at that point in Purple he was horribile and he ruined the music, specially live. Only DC should sing at that point.

Re: Best MK III live
MIE is sublime. It has so much power. LiL is also great but sounds a bit too shrill in comparison to MIE and the mixing on stage wasn't done right, lord is too quiet, but MIE is perfect. California jamming is a disappointment. the dvd is great but the cd is full of the crowd cheering; you only realise that richie has started playing burn when who hear the squeak of his feedback. poorly recorded.
MIE does everything for me

Re: Best MK III live
Martin Birch was the perfect audio technician. The drums only sound very good on "Made in Europe". Listen to the bass drum at the beginning of "You fool no one".

I don't care it's edited, or if the applause is not from those particular shows. I used to care stuff like that, but (again, just like as a kid when I first heard that LP) now I just enjoy a good piece of music.
I feel the same way. Made in Japan was a bit of the exception that proves the rule. Completely live and a fantastic performance.
But I don't bank on abnormalities like that. I remember Dio going on about how Live Evil was heavily doctored: so WHAT? Both he and Iommi sound incredible all over that cd, doctored or not.
My favorite MKIII live album is Live in Paris '75. Blackmore is top notch, one of his best performances ever. Just check out "Gypsy" which also features some chillingly spectacular vocalisations by Hughes and Coverdale. Stormbringer, Burn, Lady Double Dealer...exciting as h$#@.

Yeah, that's a gem. I also love RB's middle solo in that: how he does a short quieter doodling for a while and then opens up the volume to bring the solo to a simple but beautiful ending.
