Live In Stuttgart 1993 - revisited
I know that this, I think I can now use the term, legendary concert, has been disscused to death, but as I was listening to it the other day I thought I might bring the subject back up.
I bought this on it's own last year (although I almost got Live In Europe 1993 boxset a few years back), and payed only 10 eu for it. I thought that price was a steal, and I still do compared to prices of mostly every other double live album out there.
I heard alot about this one even before I bought it, but I had already heard the CHOHW cd and did not understand what the fuzz was all about. Ok, I thought Anya and Speed King where great, but the rest....not really. I also didn't like the production, as I felt it lacked power.
Well I was nicely suprised when I put the Stuttgart disc into the cd-player. The mule jam, the subtle duel in KAYBD, hall of the mountain king, lazy intro.....etc.
But at the end of the day, there where a few subjects bothering me. Im interested to see if any of you agree.
What bother's me the most is the production. Beacuse Im a sound freak that is. While It was nice to see that the sound packed a powerfull punch (something I missed in CHOHW), and while the mix is clear and you heard each instrument clearly at all times, there where a few things bothering me.
First the guitar sound. Ok its very good (compare it to knewborth ) but it's a bit too thin for RB's sound at that tour. Ok, his sound was always thin, but listen to his tone on CHOHW DVD or any bootlegs (brixton, in your trousers, finland), and the tone is warmer and not as thin. It seems at times the guitar can't breath (listen to the blues lick in BN, and the gentle anya passage here and on CHOHW Cd for example of how his clean tone is ´´underwater``). It still sound good but I feel the production took some power away from it. And I just hate how Blackmore sounds slow and sloppy on Child In Time and Lazy. Or was he generaly not in a ´´ripping`` mode that night?
The sound is a bit too bassy, drums and vocals a bit too upfront and keyboards a bit too low.
But I guess that would only bother a sound freak like myself. Overrall it's still a good , clean powerfull sound but not a 5. More a 3/5.
As for the performances, I can't liste to CIT without a proper guitar solo. Really the only let down for me. I won't go into IG's voice.
But what amazed me, was the interaction betwen Blackmore and Lord. The freakin duel in CIT, KAYBD, SK, SOTW, and interact nicely in the mule jam.
Well, your thoughts? I gotta run otherwise I would write more
btw, If anyone would be kind enough to supply me with an original bootleg of this show or at least one song from it (lazy maybe?), im interested to hear how it ´´truly`` sounded.

Re: Live In Stuttgart 1993 - revisited
oh and btw, this is a quote from Mary Longs bootleg corner;
Sometimes he's even brilliant again, in a great playing mood, e.g. on Anya and Lazy. On latter he is probably showing the limit of how fast a human being can play a guitar... A lesson for all these Vais, Satches and Malmies who can't even smell there...
I don't agree with this comment at all, he sounds a bit slow and sloppy (specially in the final section before the drum solo), compared to most lazy's I heard on the tour.

Re: Live In Stuttgart 1993 - revisited
Another weak point for me, performance wise (compared to other great show's) are Paint it Black (lack of a short but nice guitar passage, and not the best solo from Lord) and Woman From Tokyo (pretty awfull). TBRO is very good, but not as good as it was in the final days.
But overrall a top 3 show from that tour, and one of the very best DP live offerings.
A twist in the tale is incredible, the best version on the tour imo, with Blackmore riffing like crazy all over the place.

IMO, there are a few great versions with the Morse-era Purple....aka "The Current Line Up"!
--- "It can't be hemmoroids! Everybody knows he's a perfect asshole!" Ian Gillan commenting on Blackmore's mystery illness causing show cancelations...a long time ago!

Re: Live In Stuttgart 1993 - revisited
DP in full flight. The interaction between Lord and Blackmore (something that is missing on the MK JLT Bootlegs that I have) is the real highlight for me. People complain about IG's voice, but I think he does a good job.
