I think it's safe to say that Rapture is one hell of a step in the right direction for the boyz. I too had serious doubts after Bananas, but the new album totally kicks ass.

What I like is that everyone is playing like their lives depended on it...including Gillan. I haven't heard him sing this aggressively on a studio album in 20 years.

The album is dark and mean...and to the point. The way every Purple album should be.

Best of all, these tunes will translate to the stage very well.

Kudos to the band.

True, but don't forget that 7 (or was it 8) Abandon tracks made it onto the set for that tour, and Abandon isn't many people's favourite album these days

I love Bananas - it's different. That to me is the key to their success: In Rock - Fireball - Machine Head; Perpendicular - Bananas - ROTD. At the very least they all sound different. These guys deserve alot of credit. Yet to hear ROTD in full to make a complete comment.

Bananas - as an album & tour is a good base, why:
1.In two years on the road DP attend over
1 500 000 people on shows/acording Ian Gillan/it was the best tour by this criterias since PS tour.
2.Few songs - Silver tongue,Bananas,Contact lost,I`ve got your Number was well accept.
At this point with new album/according most of opinions from Amazon, jourbalists, etc. - best in last 20 years/they have a great chance again to conquer the world but with set with only few "very old" songs.

Re: ROTD vs Bananas?

Bananas is a good alblum but after a year and a half...I find myself skipping a lot of songs when I'm listening in my car. Usually listen to SGD, Haunted (it's a guilty pleasure) Silver Tounge, IGYN, Bananas, DIT.

It's too early to tell on ROTD for sure but I have to say I haven't enjoyed an album by any rock artist more on the first listen in a long time. This alblum grabs you by the throat. I like the Morse era alblums. In fact, Purpendicular and Bananas are stronger overall than any Reunion era Blackmore alblums (Ritchie LPs in the 80s and 90s are all so hit and miss....of course when he hit the ball...it was a homerun)

Money Talks, ROTD, CQA, kiss, MTV, Junkyard and BTB are just inspired pieces of rock music. All other tracks are good but may end up on the "skip" list a year from now. We'll see.

What strikes me about ROTD is that it seems like the band really doesn't have an agenda. Purpendicular tried hard to be different, Abandon tried hard to be hard, Bananas tried hard to be different. ROTD just sounds like the boys sat down had some fun and wrote some great songs. On top of that this is the best DP lyrically in a long time.

Re: ROTD vs Bananas?

Money Talks vs. HoP- House of Pain
Girls Like That vs. SGD- Sun Goes Down
Wrong Man vs. Haunted- Haunted
Rapture Of The Deep vs. RotD- Rapture of the Deep
Clearly Quite Absurd vs. ST- Clearly quite Absurd
Don't Let Go vs. Walk On- Don't Let Go
Back To Back vs. PoI- Pictures of Innocence
Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye vs. IGYN- I got your Number
MTV vs. NaW = Never a Word (my album doesn't have MTV emoticon)
Junkyard Blues vs. Bananas- Junkyard Blues
Before Time Began vs. DiT- Before Time Began

Bananas 6, Rapture 5

this is pretty much what I expected. The strong tracks on Rapture are better (title track, CQA, before time began). I feel Rapture, however, has more plodding moments than Bananas.
