Deep Purple (rate it)

Tracklist on DEEP PURPLE:
1. Chasing shadows
2. Blind
3. Lalena
4. Medley: a) Fault line; b) The painter
5. Why didn't Rosemary?
6. Bird has flown
7. April

This album is the bset Mark I album ever, another "classic" album, well Purple has a lot of "classic" albums and this is one of them, truly a great band.

What can I say, it's like a hard rock album with touches of classical music, and with Elvis Presley as the lead singer emoticon. Well Evans sounds like the King.

"Chasing Shadows", "The Painter", "Bird Has Flown" and "Why Didn't Rosemary" are truly an unforgettable rock songs, "Rosemary" is my personal fave. The epic "April" is mesmerizing and stunning.

Rod Evans deserves another chance in the music world.

Good.

Lalena is boring as hell, but the others songs are great. I prefer Shades, but DP III is better than Talyesin.

I good end for MkI, but compared to almost everything that has followed (exceptions Abandon and S&M) very mediocre.

To me the first purple classic, even if Shades to me is even better, that one is more like sub-classic. Underground classic. In fact, so is "Deep Purple" too, but it doesn't sound like that, to me.

Re: Deep Purple (rate it)

I've mentioned it two or three times on this forum...the transition from Fault Line to The Painter is the quinessential early DP sound in my opinion. That said I think it rates very good and is my favorite Mark I album. They seemed to get an identifying sound together for that one but in typical Purple fashion they shuffled the line up. Of course no Purple fan would complain about bringing in Gillan and Glover. Rod Evans is a very good singer and it's a shame the way his career fizzled out.
I had a chance to see Captain Beyond at a small festival several years ago however in an interview with Lee Dorman he was asked if Rod Evans would be involved and he answered with a very stern "NO WAY". He must have burned that bridge as well.

By the way, Why Didn't Rosemary ever take the pill?

The first truly identifiable DP album, with TMIB starting fire on all cylinders, and some very good song writing (IMHO, the previous 2 efforts featured some poor cover versions and some exceedingly dodgy and pretentious songwriting). Now we're starting to 'rock'!

The album is killer, from start to finish.

One of the finest pieces of vinyl to come out of sixties Britain.
